Amoare walked down the corridor a little slower than her quick stride normally would carry her. Was it time to do this? Or should she wait another turn or two? No. Now was better than later. She'd be able to work up a rep with the Candidate Master before the next queen flew.
Pausing, she frowned, alone in the corridor she was begining to wonder. Would a reputation with the Candidate Master even make a difference to the hatchlings when they come from their shell? No. Of course not. Thats just silly.
Then she smiled. A good relationship with anyone and everyone was a good idea, weither it would be usefull or not later on.
She had met H'mei before around the weyr, but he had been one of them that was always busy and harder to find to offer help. Oh well. She'd make the best of the situation. Bringing herself up and pulling her shoulders back, she knocked on the door to his office.
----
H'mei sat at his desk area, drawing a picture that he had had in his miund for a while. His drawing were never quite what one would call magnificent, but they were his doodles, and he liked them. A knock came to his door, and he quickly stuffed the drawing in a cubby hole. As much as he cherished his self-proclaimed "masterpieces," he didn't want to share them with the world.
"Come in," he yelled, once he had properly stashed the utensils. The girl entered the room.
H'mei struggled to recall her name. Am...Amoare.
"Welcome to my office, Amoare. I have seen you around here before, but I do not believe we have had out meeting yet. You are...my records say fifteen turns. So, you have been a candidate for one full turn. Before that, you were a Weyrbrat, so you'll need no Search token."
Of course, since she had been a Weyrbrat before, H'mei already had most of her information, such as birthing day, and most of her general history, though nothing too deep.
"You were born in the summer, I see. But what I need to know is, do you have any valuables that need to be locked up?" he asked.
He wanted to get to know this girl as much as possible, so instead of giving her the first degree, he asked the questions one at a time. Unlike normal, he didn't have anything to do. Besides doodle, that is.
----
Amoare walked in and took a seat. Sitting on her hands, her feet kicked idly as she listened to the older man. Hearing he remembered her name, Amoare couldn’t help but smile.
“Thank You, Canidate Master H'mei. Oh you remember me! I was worried you’ve have forgotten.” she said happily. Hearing her age and birth season, she nodded confirmation. “No sir. No valuables. I’ve no parents to give me any.” She said easily.
She was excited to finally be a candidate, but at the same time she was nervous in the presence of the man. It felt similar to the tests the Weyrhaper would ask over the teaching ballads. What would happen if she answered a question wrongly? Would she still be able to be a candidate? Even as these thoughts ran thru her head, her face remained lit with a child-like smile.
----
"I'm sorry to hear that, young lady. Have you any pets to help you make it through the sorrow?" he asked, hoping he was being somewhat tactful. Sometimes he had problesm doing that.
"Also, in your days here at the Weyr, since you were born here, have you picked up a particular skill that you would like to continue, or would you like to pick a new one?"
He smiled at her, hoping she was feeling comfortable talking to him. So far, it seemed as such.
----
Amoare shook her head. "Nope. No pets sir. The weryfolk and fellow brats were more than enough to keep me happy." she said with her never-ending smile on her face.
At his question of craft, Amoare paused and chewed on her lower lip thoughtfully. After a moments pause she answered, "Unless you count running messeges or washing dragons, no I have not a craft. I've run errands for some of the crafters, but never have I tryed one."
The never-ending smile faultered as a thought came to her. "Will I not be able to become a candidate without a craft?" she asked rather annxiously. She suddenly felt very unprepaired, a feeling that would give her nightmares that night.
----
H'mei grinned to try to ease her obvious discomforture. "No, child, it's just that in your schedule as a candidate, we allow time in the day for craft-practicing. If you've no craft, that's just as well. More free time for you, or if you like, I'm sure we could get a journeyman from whatever craft you choose."
He smiled. This girl was agreeable, and these types always made for good candidates. And someday, good riders.
