J'mie finished his last bit of a nearly five mile run, ending in the Bowl of the Weyr. He proceeded to do some groundwork as Gavanth made his way, groggily from his own weyr to his rider. Why are you up so early. The sun is not even touching the horizon, I could barely get here. Dragons are not nocturnal you know. The average sized bronze spoke a bit moodily to his rider. He hated being up so early. I hate that people are here earlier and earlier making my training and workout time crowded. I like the alone time. Its good for you but I like to sleep.... Stop complaining and lets strap on the riding gear. J'mie was sweating from head to toe, even at night the Southern summers were hot. He was glad he had come when it was still dark.

Shereae had been unable to sleep, and, after having left a note for the Candidate Master, left for the bowl. After all, she thought, somewhat naively, it's the Weyr. What could hurt me? She sat on a rock, reflecting over the happenings over the last few months. She had come to the Weyr after working for her Beastcrafter father, to try her hand at Impressing a gold. Lately, though, she had rather thought maybe she ought to give up hope of Impressing one. There were so many girls already (We have to give the gold ample choice, she had been told), and with the addition of new ones periodically, the idea of her Impressing such a dragon looked, at best, ludicrous. She snorted into the very early morning air, frowning at herself.
Hearing the sounds of other life somewhat nearby, she looked up from the sand she had been running her fingers through in the mockery of drawing. There was a young man, whom she had seen around the Weyr, and his bronze. Suddenly, she felt foolish and embarrased, as though she had been deliberately hiding from him and had been caught. She'd had poor luck with bronzeriders before, though the only one she had met thus far had ended up offering her a firelizard egg. Still, that entire conversation with him had been...dismal, and she wasn't eager to repeat it. But this rider looked a mild calmer than S'hon had, so she shrugged. "Hello there!" she called out, standing and dusting her skirts off.

Turning at the sound of the young girl's voice he looked a bit shocked that anyone else was up. "Hello. " He wiped some sweat from his creased brow with a rag. "I thought I was the only one crazy enough to be up this early in the morning." J'mie added with a hint of a smile, for J'mie rarely smiled. She ought to be in bed too. My bloodlnes should give enough proof that I am not to be woken till after the sun reaches the earth.. not a moment sooner. Gavanth was looking at the girl experimentally. He figured she had no dragon of her own. She was a strong candidate though, he thought, that was at least from his limited experience.
"Now what is a young woman like yourself doing out here alone so early in the morning? You could get into trouble. Not everyone in the Weyr is good to young girls." J'mie sounded very fatherly a moment, as he was thinkign of his daughter... he hoped she didn't wander off alone when one could barely see. Think of the things that could go wrong... men like J'daer who wanted to put women in their place or just take advantage of their own strength.
He didn't mind that the girl was there, but he worried that she was wandering alone. He himself at least had Gavanth if anything were to happen. Well it couldn't hurt to be more nice to the girl so he cofinished strapping the leathers on to Gavanth as if she had not really interrupted him.

"I couldn't sleep. I don't know why, but I've passed a horrible night," Shereae replied, smiling at the bright dragon eye looking at her. "He's gorgeous. I wish I had a dragon." Shereae approached the dragonmen, though she stopped at a polite distance away, not wishing to disturb him in his work.
"Now, what is a young woman like yourself doing out here alone so early in the morning? You could get into trouble. Not everyone in the Weyr is good to young girls," the dragonman said, sounding faintly worried for her well-being.
Shereae snorted. "That'd be good advice, were I a young girl, Lord..." Shereae trailed off, realizing she didn't know the man's name. How embarassing, she thought. "I apologize, sir, but I don't know your name." Shereae winced as she said this, regretful that she had fallen ill on that particular lesson day. I must look like a complete dimglow.

He turned to face her noting that she might be older than he thought but as he had a daughter only a few turns younger she must seem young to him. "Gavanth will take that as a compliment. He is a rather good looking Bronze....at least thats what the greens tell him." J'mie wondered if he should mind that the girl liked Gavanth but all teh candidates were always curious about ranking dragons.
"I'm Wingleader of Desta, J'mie. " He added in a calm tone that did not show a hint of being slighted by the girl's poor knowledge of who was whom. "And you are?" He asked, knowing it to be only proper for him to ask her similairly what she had asked him. Besides if someoen was looking for her he'd be abe to direct them.

Shereae's eyes widened as he gave her not only his name, but also his rank. "I apologize, Lord J'mie." The young woman was properly chagrined, but she gave no weak excuses for her ignorance. "I am Shereae," she introduced herself, pulling her head up proudly, "and I am but a Candidate. I hope to Impress a Golden dragon, but I doubt it will happen." She gritted her teeth, but her lips had traces of a grin lifting the corners.
Watching him intently for a few moments, she was reminded of a question she had been wanting to ask someone who rode a dragon for some time. "Are those straps really as hard to use as they say, Lord J'mie? Someone told me they are hard to put on a dragon, and then to take off," she said, explaining her question.

"Sherae it is an honor. If you doubt yourself then how will the dragon know what you are truly like. I always wanted to impress a Bronze adn look at me. Tell yourself that you are worhty of Agold and you might become more worthy. Queen Riders have a lot of responsibility so there is no room for self doubt. Even if each Queen is different. I am glad to see you are mostly confidant. Just don't doubt what you are worhty of. The Dragons know as always." He added at the end. Gavanth wasn't really a search dragon so he had no way of knowing how strong a vibe the girl gave off.
"The straps are not difficult , after the Weyrlingmaster has you do ti a few hundred times you'll think they are easy as pie." He remembered those days. some people were perfectionists. As he was, in the end but at the time he remmebered not being able to do teh straps perfectly. Besides Gavanth had grwn since then. "I wouldn't worry about it. You will be plenty prepared."

Shereae nodded. "I know you're right, and the Candidate Master told me the same thing. Sometimes it's just difficult." The girl had made friends, easily enough, and had gotten into her fair bit of trouble, though nothing to be concerned over. It was simply concern over the number of girls vying for the same colored dragon. When he told her about straps, she smiled. "I see. It seems like they'd chafe the dragon, seeing as they're made of leather and all," she said thoughtfully.
She circled around the dragon, maintaining her respectful distance. His light colored belly looked huge to the girl, who stood all of six-foot-six-inches. He was smaller than some of the other bronzes she had seen in her stay at the Weyr, but she liked his coloring the best. "Bet I could pick him out of a crowd the easiest," she mumbled, talking aloud to herself as was her habit. Louder, so J'mie could hear her, she said, "I really like him. Bet he's nice too, I've heard dragons like folks like themselves."

J'mie noted the girl was a bit more knowledgeable than he had thought. "He never complains that it husrtts of itches so I would assume its relatively painless. Our number one concern is always our dragons." He meant the Weyr as a whole in a way becasue the dragons were their reason for existance. No dragons, no Weyr. J;mie watched teh girl examining Gavanth.
"He is in excellent shape. He is very distinguishible. " I love how humans talk about me as if I'm not right here listening. I know but you are not about to just talk to any human now are you? Gavanth resumed his silent treatment he wanted to go abck to bed anyway. It was all J'mie's fault that he was up. "He is actually slightly annoyed with em at the moment. He hates having early workouts. He's not a morning person. Dragons are similair to their riders, i mean why would they bond to a personality they dislike, but they are also different. Gavanth and I ahve our dissagreements now and then. Dragons thankfully dothe choosing cause if not anyone could impress a Bronze and the weyr would be in trouble."

Nodding again, Shereae giggled. "I've never heard of a dragon being grumpy before, though it makes sense. Is he often grumpy?" Suddenly sobered, she glanced worriedly up at J'mie. "Should I be talking to him about him? I just had heard it was rude to address a dragon without his rider's permission."
(Yeah, that's horribly short, but I didn't want to just go on and make her talk to Gavanth.))

"No only when I make him get up really early and when I do somethign he dislikes. Generally Gavanth is quite laid back..." He had to say it was true. The dragon had a wonderful nature about him. "He is ignoring us for the moment my dear. As he is a bit miffed. It is rude to talk to a dragon without permission, however if your already talking to the rider in a long conversation I fell its okay to slip in a sentance or two to the dragon. It really would seem quite natural to do so." J'mie was glad he was helping the girl out on her knowledge of dragons.
He had been raised at the Weyr adn had never known anything else. All the sudden J'mie felt like he was forgetting something. You left the felines without their box. My little gold is sleeping. Your Mirage is throwing a fit though... you will find new scratch marks on your table legs. It was rude of course to stop paying attention to people to concentrate on what your dragon was saying. "I apologize for that, Gavanth informed me of what I was forgettign this morning."

"Oh, no problems. I suppose I've been monopolizing your time with all my silly questions, m'lord," Shereae said, curtseying a little. Turning to see the wedge-head of the dragon, she said, "You are surely the most awesome, beautimus dragon ever." She nodded to her words. "I can't wait until I Impress a dragon. I can only hope she'll have half of your loveliness and intelligence," she said. "And that's not just lip service."
Shereae smiled at both dragon and rider. "I guess I better stop bothering you pretty soon. Thank you for answering my questions, and letting me see your dragon. I think he's very nice."

"You were no bother my dear. Feel free to visit us." The girl did remind him of his daughter. He should visit her sometime....but why? She wasperfectly happy with the Harpers there would be no reason for him to visit. she didn't need him anymore and he couldn't bear to look at someoen who so resembled his deceased weyrmate. He felt like a horrible person in that moment.
"Gavanth is one of the best Bronzes on Pern."He grinned, knowing it was true. " The dragon nudged the girl with his large head, very gently. Just lettign her know he appreciated her comment. "He is rather fond of compliments. Don't go feeding his ego too much. If you ever want or need a ride...just come to us. Gavanth would surely give you a ride." He wouldn't mind giving a girl who had no dragon a ride. "I'm afraid I do have to leave at the moment. I left my felines without their box. I don't want them messing my weyr up. Don't suppose you like felines?"

Shereae smiled as the dragon nudged her. She knew that dragons liked their eyeridges scratched, so she obliged. "I will, thank you, sir." Very pleased by the offer, Shereae smiled even more.
"I'm afraid I do have to leave at the moment. I left my felines without their box. I don't want them messing my weyr up. Don't suppose you like felines?" J'mie asked. "I do, matter of fact. My friend, back on the ranch, had one. Death to tunnel snakes, he was. And nice too. He liked his belly scratched, that was for sure. Why do you ask, m'lord?" the girl asked, already thinking she knew the answer.

Gavanth was very pleased that she had scratched him. See J'mie, some people actually care about me other than you. I know and besides she probably likes you because your a Bronze and already known to be magnificent example for dragon kind.
"Yes thats why I got my first one I don't want anything getting into my weyr that is vermin like in nature. I came across the kitten in the stables, my Wingsecond's cat had a litter. The little thing thinks that Gavanth is its owner. Of course Gavanth can't be playing with a kitten so I'm afraid she doesn't get much play time. If you want you could come up and play with her while I get their box all ready for them."
