“You’re a little tight, Liren,” said Kalara, sliding her fingers in between the blue flit’s tail and her neck and prying it away a little bit. “Trying to do me in now? And after all this time, I thought you were my one true friend.”
She laughed a little, and the blue flit trilled in response as he sat up, sitting on his haunches and loosening his hold with his tail. He bit playfully at Kalara’s ear, and she batted at him, causing him to take flight to get out of the way.
“Silly blue, what will I do with you?” Kalara said with a grin, following his flashing blue body as he flew to sit on the fence that held the herdbeasts in.
She reached the fence and leaned against it, brown eyes studying the herdbeasts that grazed in the field. She’d gotten to know them each well, but the six months in a Weyr taught her that she couldn’t get too attached to them. It was all too likely that her favorite would be eaten by a dragon unexpectedly. She admired the dragons too much to get angry about it though. This was her way of honoring them… by giving them one of her favorite things in the whole world. Something she cared for dearly.
One of the herdbeasts ambled over to her, poking its wet, sticky nose in her face. She reached out and scratched its head, smiling even as she avoided the snuffling nose. The herdbeast gradually lost interest in her though and returned to grazing. Kalara’s eyes drifted to the sky as the herdbeast moved away, and she watched the dragons flying in and out of the Weyr, daydreaming about what it would be like to fly like that… To soar through the air and see everything so small below… She dreamed on for a while, vaguely hoping that one of the dragons would come to eat soon, and maybe bring his or her rider, so that she could talk with them. She did enjoy that, when it happened to occur…
