Name: Safiya
Gender: Female
Age/Birthday: 2481
Orientation: Straight
Location: Sodalis Weyr
Rank/Wing: Jr. Weyrwoman, Queen's Wing
Family: Mother – Sylira – 46 Turns – Sylira has an open mind that is willing to do almost anything the heart dreams of. She doesn’t think anything is impossible, and nothing can change or sway her mind once she has decided it. She grew up off of her parents raising, training, and breeding runners, and her fate was the same. She continued the business without any training other than her father’s. Her mother gave her the basics of reading and writing, although it wasn’t very good compared to a Harper’s training. She met M’ryl during childhood since their parents were rivals in the runners business, and once they had taken over their parents’ work, every time they tried to get mad at each other they only fell deeper in love. And then M’ryl was Searched. She gave up the business, sold the runners, and joined M’ryl at the Weyr, where she offered to help in the Kitchens. She went through intense training, until at last she became an assistant cook. They are together ever since then, and still now. Sylira and M’ryl have five children and raise them all in the Weyr as Weyrbrats.
Father – M’ryl – 58 Turns – M’ryl is the direct opposite of Sylira with his quick temper and sharp tongue. He isn’t open that much, but being with Sylira opened his eyes and quieted his tongue. After they were together, Sylira seemed to calm him down a notch or two. His parents were just like he had been at first. They were quick to anger and fierce competitors. When their businesses were interfered by Sylira’s parents’ business, they became rivals in the runner work. M’ryl grew up thinking poorly of their rival family, but once he got the business to himself and bumped into Sylira at every race or auction they went to, he couldn’t help but fall in love instead of anger. He was Searched at the age of 16 Turns and Impressed Brown Mirath, and after leaving Sylira for two turns of weyrling training, he came back (with the Weyrleader’s permission) and invited her to live with him at the Weyr. They are weyrmates ever since, and had their five weyrbrats. He got messages from his parents every now and then about how they betrayed him and the business, but he made his brother happy when he gave it to him instead.
Brother – F’rey – 27 Turns – As the firstborn, he was spoiled the most of all the kids, since their parents didn’t think they would have anymore. But he never let being spoiled get to his head, and he actually grew up to be a good man. Well, that is, depending on your definition of a “good man”. He was a flirt, a charmer, and a feminist. His life seemed to revolve around girls, especially once he was Searched. He Impressed Brown Kyoth and the two clSafiyad. Dragons are supposed to be like the person they bond with, and maybe they actually are, but Kyoth never showed any sign of being like F’rey. He always yells at F’rey for sleeping with a woman one night and then moving on to another woman the next night. The longest “relationship” he’s ever had with a woman would be one sevenday. Some say that the only reason Kyoth picks on him so is because he cares that much, but it will be awhile until they solve their differences. Since he was born so much earlier than the rest, he doesn’t even know that he has two more siblilngs, Arinna and Tellinar. He left when S’mar and Safiya were still quite young. He doesn’t keep in contact with his parents ever since they heard he got a girl pregnant and didn’t stay with her. She wasn’t even sure the father was him, but he was pretty sure that it was.
Brother – S’mar – 18 Turns – S’mar was always second best when he was born. He was in the shadow of F’rey’s greatness, even after his older brother left. His temper and jealousy of F’rey grew every day and soon he hated F’rey more than anything. He never spoke to anyone other than Safiya, seeing as she was also getting the same treatment from their parents. They both got their tempers from that, but S’mar’s was almost uncontrollable. He gave everything this look that they didn’t deserve the love that they got from everyone else, because they probably stole some of the love from a younger sibling. He’s judgemental, and no one really knows how he really is other than Safiya. She has seen the kinder side of him that he never lets anyone else see. He wants nothing to do with them, or so he says. He was Searched and Impressed at 17 Turns to Bronze Lormyth. They are both hard to talk to, but once someone opens him up he can be a good friend, although only Safiya has ever been able to do that.
Herself – See appearance and Personality
Sister – Arinna – 9 Turns – The youngest of the three sisters, Arinna is a quiet girl that is still afraid to speak her mind. She wasn’t even close to being born when F’rey left, and so she was left in the care of Safiya. Therefore, she listens and believes everything Safiya says without question. She doesn’t approve of how S’mar acts, but says nothing against it. Instead she talks to Safiya about it. She’s sweet and the definition of “cute”, but it seems she’ll never leave that stage to move on to pretty. She’s also very fragile with pale skin, like porcelain. Her eyes are always wide in fear or curiosity. She’s, as they say, “curious as a kitten” and questions everything to Safiya or her brothers.
Brother – Tellinar – 7 Turns – As the youngest brother, he’s still the cute and high-spirited boy that can go from sad to happy in a second. He’s not sad or angry for long, because he’s always so hyper that he can’t help but smile. No one can get mad at him for more than a minute, because every time they yell, his smile just grows and grows. It startles and disturbs them, so most of the time they try to avoid him. He does not quite understand the concept of how to make a joke funny, but it’s the effort that counts. They are not funny at all, and yet when he says them and then laughs, the people laugh at just how cute he is rather than for the joke. He’s intensely interested in either becoming a fisher or tanner. Either one is fine with him, but his parents want him to take after his older brothers and become a dragonrider. He thinks the dragons are just too big and scary and prefers working with fish, which are, in his eyes, harmless and friendly.
Pets: none
Appearance: Safiya is more than skinny, but not enough to be average. She’s very pretty for her age, and draws many eyes of the younger men. She finally has shape in legs and hips, as well as breasts. They say she takes after her beautiful mother, although she has not yet reached that standard. Safiya is around 5’10” in height, and it doesn’t look like she’s going to get any taller. Her skin is a light tan that’s browner than milky white of those who don’t go outside in the sun, but she’s not a nice, golden tan either.
Her hair until weyrling training draped down around her hips, since she never cared to worry about cutting it. But with weyrling training she found it was easier to keep her locks short. They were getting in her way when she worked. Now her hair runs just below her shoulders, so that there is still enough hair to be able to be put up in a messy bun like always. A simple cloth strap holds the messy bun up while she works, although stray locks fall to outline her face no matter what she tries to do to keep them in the bun. Safiya’s hair is a chocolate brown in color as its base, while the sunlight brings out her natural highlights of a slightly darker brown and lighter brown shade.
Safiya’s eyes stand out much less with her vibrant hair that draws most of the attention from her face. They are a deep, chocolate brown with a dark brown outline that accents the light brown iris. When up close, her eyes give you the impression that you are looking at two different mirrors in such a way that you can see yourself in detail. They are like the truth-bringers, showing people what they truly look like inside. They are like the mirrors that reflect the person’s soul when they look into her eyes. Her eyes are average in a more oval shape than circular. Long, black eyelashes frame them, making them look slightly darker from a distance.
The weyrwoman's face is covered in freckles. It’s as if someone took a pile of freckles on her nose and then spread it out to each side and sprinkled on a few more for her forehead and lower cheeks. Her eyebrows are thin and curved along the bone beneath it with a light brown color. Her nose is average-sized and is balanced on her face with a smooth and rounded point. Her ears are almost flat against her head, so they seem invisible since she always has her hair covering them. They are small ears anyway, and the earlobe does not connect to the side of her face like some people. Her lips are full and a light bubblegum pink that can as easily turn into a frown as a smile. When she does smile, it lights up her face and her eyes seem to dance. But every time she frowns her features only seem to darken in her annoyance or anger.
Personality: Safiya is at first a clutz that seems to have only air in her head with the way she acts and thinks around others. The Weyr was surprised at first that she would even Impress a Gold, but once they got to know her they understood her stronger qualities. Even so, she seems to trip on just about anything and everything that is in her path so that she lands squarely on her face. Or she trips over benches and falls into the weyrlake without anyone around to even push her. She just does this all on herself without trying to.
Sometimes it seems like she is so unintelligent because she doesn’t always get it. People can explain something to her several times, and she just will not understand what they are trying to get across to her. It’s as if it all goes in one ear and out the other because there’s nothing in her brain for the information to stick to. One of her famous looks is the confused face as she tilts her head to the side while trying to sort it out herself, which never ends well. She always tries very hard to understand, but it’s mentally impossible for her to understand certain things in life.
Second impression is where people get to go a step deeper into her personality. Everyone learns that she loves to have fun. She can take the most boring game and turn it into something fun for anyone to play. No one knows what she’ll come up with next. There’s always a smile on her face, and she laughs almost every other minute. She loves to make others happy, but the one thing she wants and loves the most is her friends. Without her friends, she thinks she would be nothing. Her friends are what give her strength, and there can never be too many. If she could, she would want to be friends with everyone on Pern, but that’s practically impossible. Even so, she doesn’t let that stop her. She tries to befriend everyone she meets.
When she’s not so happy-go-lucky, and she’s put in the spotlight, it’s like she’s a completely different person. All of a sudden she’s strong and bold, not afraid to state her opinions or beliefs... but somone has to push her to it.
Giving is another trait she has towards even strangers. If someone is hurt or having some sort of trouble, she’ll practically give her own life to help them. No, she would give her life. She’s just that devoted to the people around her to pay them back for the friendship that they have given her.
Even after growing up alone, or so it seemed with her parents preoccupied with the boys and leaving her to take care of her younger siblings, she’s always thankful for the friends she has today and that she hasn’t really had any tragedies in her life like so many tell her about when they ask for her advice. Safiya is what some call a comforter, or a listener. She cares about her friends, and even those who aren’t her friends when it comes to any problems that may come their way. She always sits and listens to their problems, constantly comforting them in a way her parents used to do to her when she was younger and they were not as busy. She even gives out advice when it is needed, even though she doubts any of her advice is that good. She hasn’t been through a whole lot since she was born, but she has gone through some random events that most others have not gone through. Still, she feels that it is not always her place to give advice, so when the subject is a life-changing matter for the person that could alter their future, she tries to let them know that she cares, but she doesn’t want to be the one that might ruin her future because of some poor advice. In her mind, her friends and the Weyr come before herself, which is still dangerous for if there is no one to watch her back when she’s not looking.
Third impression, Safiya has one small issue that turns people off from her. She speaks her mind and doesn’t always think before she acts. It has been getting better, but most of the time she’ll just spill out everything she was thinking. It could be a compliment to the person, but on other occasions it is not.
Safiya just laughs at herself so the rest are laughing with her instead of at her. I Whenever she is nervous it usually means that whatever she is planning on doing must be very important to her. She’s amazingly strong-minded in a way that it’s impossible to change her mind. Once she has made up her decision, it is there to stay. There is nothing and no one that can ever make her change her mind. Determination is one of her strong points, but it also is one of her downfalls.
When something important comes up, it’s as if Safiya has this entirely different presence in the room, like the candle has suddenly become the sun in an instant. She’s a hard worker and will always get things done when asked. She does her best at what she does, even if she doesn’t entirely understand what she’s doing, but the key is that she is always dependable. Anyone can come to her with a problem and there is no doubt in their minds that she will give an arm and a leg to help them.
Not to mention just how stubborn she is. She will not budge an inch from her standing point, both mentally and physically until the opposing side agrees with her on a subject she is truly passionate about. Only one or two times has she ever wavered and given in, but that was only when her siblings convinced her over the time period of a week that what she had thought was true had in fact been quite impossible. When the subject is something trivial that she knows would not be worth an argument, she agrees with her opposition even if she doesn’t believe in that answer.
Not only can she be a great leader, but also she handles situations under pressure with a cool head. While other people freeze up and do nothing about a critical situation, she takes evasive action. When Arinna needed medical care for a large gouge in her leg, she immediately rushed her to the Infirmary with S’mar and Tellinar helping to carry her. In decision-making, usually she makes the right decisions unless she just doesn’t get it. That is the one thing that can lead her astray from carrying out the right decision. Otherwise she’s coolheaded and can handle almost any situation thrown her way, or at least the situations that relate to what she has already learned. If she has no idea what to do, she tries to connect it with some prior experience or take the person to someone who does know what to do.
She’s a joker too; one who loves to make others laugh. She is the one that will make a joke or two to help lighten a situation, as long as it seems appropriate, or she will be there to give you any comfort she can. Her jokes may not always be funny, but the way she tries so hard to make others laugh can usually break out a smile or two.
Safiya has a strong personality with a hard shell and a soft core. She can be tough, stubborn, determined, cool-headed, and unpredictable when most meet her or the subject is serious. For those who know her personally, she is funny, intelligent, quick-witted, loyal, caring, and trustworthy, although not many people see this side. Her major downfalls are her clumsiness, air headedness and bold spoken words. She speaks her mind with a fiery passion that is hard to express. She’s done too many embarrassing things in her life that it all washes off like water. She’s the one you ask to do the silly tasks or talk in front of a large audience, because she will not back down. She’s a challenger and will not quit until she overcomes every obstacle that is thrown her way.
Note: This Weyrling has a strong obsession for bubbly pies and will either race after the smell or melt to her knees with just a whiff. There’s also a rumor about Safiya not liking flits after someone witnessed her freaking out when a blue flit had tried to help her bathe Ryceth. No one knows if it is true or not, but no one has dared to ask her yet either.
History: When Safiya was born, her parents already had their little perfect baby. F’rey was twelve turns, but they still focused on him as if he was the baby of the family. Of course, she wasn’t picky since she was not old enough to understand anything. S’mar was three turns, but he could already understand that he never got any attention. It had already begun, the mini war between siblings. Her parents would give her the food, milk, and everything that she needed, but nothing that she wanted. Once she had everything needed, they would go back to F’rey. S’mar never seemed to get attention. No one was there when he first stood, crawled, spoke, or walked. No one was excited for him, until Safiya grew up.
And right when she turned three turns, F’rey was Searched. S’mar was five turns then, and he had already gotten his temper. He would throw fits of just jumping and screaming. Being three, she didn’t understand anything going on just yet. F’rey Impressed, became a weyrling, and all their parents would talk about was how amazing F’rey was.
Sylira and M’ryl suddenly became too busy when dealing with Weyr affairs with problems with the North and such. Sylira was trying to become Head Cook, and had no time either. They were left in the hands of S’mar, who at six turns didn’t know anything yet. He was just a mischievous troublemaker. By the time she was five, F’rey finally graduated Weyrling Training. Much to S’mar’s anger, he visited them more often that Turn to show off his dragon. He only made the family more tense with the anger from S’mar. Safiya was finally realizing what was going on when he came back, although she wouldn’t fully understand it until she was eight. After almost a full turn, F’rey got the hint from S’mar that he wasn’t wanted. He never came back after that, and only whenever she asked to see F’rey or bumped into him did she get to really have a talk with him about what had happened between him and S’mar. Even so, S’mar seemed to think she was on his side since she never disagreed with him, but she never agreed either.
If only she had been older, she thinks that she would have been close with F’rey. He really was a great guy, but S’mar had judged him because of the way their parents doted on him. He could have been an amazing older brother for S’mar to look up to, if only he had been given the chance. She started to try and visit him in his weyr, but every time she walked in there would be another woman and she had to sneak out quickly. Her parents got pregnant again, and this time it was with their second and last girl. Arinna was born when Safiya was eight turns, so she could finally understand how life worked. Her parents were still busy, so she tried to take care of Arinna as best as she could with some tips from F’rey whenever she could get in touch with him.
At nine turns, the turn passed in a blur, because when she was ten, Tellinar was born. Arinna was three turns, so it was easier to care for her since she entered the cute stage. Tellinar was in her charge next, and she hoped he would be the last. Seeing as he was raised around so many girls, since S’mar always found something else to pretend to be doing instead, he grew up a bit more girlish with the cute and hyper attributes. The next turn was probably the worst so far. She was eleven turns and her parents had finally realized how to stop having babies, but it seemed they passed it on to someone else.
F’rey came back one day and told them how he got some girl pregnant. When he told his parents he was not going to help her because they were not sure it was even his, they were so angry they refused to speak to him ever again. Their perfect boy had suddenly done something so bad in their eyes that they seemed to open their eyes and see the real F’rey. Actually, when Safiya had asked why he really wouldn’t help the girl, he said it was because she was not a nice woman. She was so controlling and cruel that he could never help her with that. Instead, he was going to try and convince her to give the baby to a foster mother. Safiya didn’t understand it as much, but she believed he was right no matter what her parents told her.
When Safiya became fifteen turns, S’mar was Searched. S’mar Impressed Bronze Lormyth, much to his surprise. Lormyth and Safiya were the only ones that saw his softer side, and the two went together so well that there could not have been a better match. Lormyth was just as tempermental as S’mar, be he also was nice and kind to Safiya. She was amazed at such a large dragon and every time S’mar visited her, she was just as excited, if not more, as the last time. She never had to worry about wandering into his room, because he wanted nothing to do with women if F’rey loved them so much. He hated it when the other two would just wander right into the room without permission, but for some reason he rather enjoyed Safiya’s company. She seems to be on everyone’s good side, and if someone is angry with her she tries to sort it out.
She knows that she has not have as much of a history as others, but in her mind, the history is not all that makes the person. Only the growth in herself is important, making her no less important than those girls and boys who have been abused, orphaned, or any such other tragedies. So, even though she has not learned as much from her past, she listens to others to learn from theirs and offer them comfort.
