His birth mother is a low-ranked cook named Sarila who acknowledges him as a son but pays him no mind for the most part. His father was a rider disappointed from a mating flight and in search of quick companionship, though his mother didn't know the man and could never tell her son his name. He knows that his father's identity will always remain a mystery to him and this is something that bothers him, but only when he stops to think about it. Usually he just ignores the fact.
Tes knows he has two half-siblings from his mother, younger sisters Seida and Nevika, but he never made an effort to get to know them beyond their names and respective ages. The fact that they exist means little to him, all things considered. His foster siblings have been far more significant figures in his life.

Since then, he's fed her scraps from his meals and tried not to wince too hard when she left still-alive 'presents' on his sleeping furs. She's a wily young thing, one of the only reasons she's still alive in an environment as hostile to pets as the Weyr.
Appearance: Tesarel sports average-to-dark brown hair with a mild wave, the highlights a very muted honey-color, and keeps it cropped close to his ears for convenience. He only has to run his fingers through it a few times each morning and throughout the day, making it easy to wash and care for. His eyes are a much lighter brown, the color of fine honey and oval in shape. His skin tone is naturally brown, though he doesn't spend as much time out in the sun as he used to when he was younger and could more easily escape the responsibility of chores. He'll never reach six feet tall, though he'll only fall an inch or so shy when he reaches his full height in another turn, and his build is average for someone who doesn't work heavy labor on a daily basis. Candidate and weyrling training will build muscles that aren't there at present.
Tes's usual attire is a hand-me-down tunic and pair of breeches in whatever colors his foster mother gives him. He prefers to wear sandals when the weather permits, but has a pair of old, sturdy boots for rain and chill. He's an average-looking young man, not handsome but not hideous, and doesn't have money for pointless trinkets.

One of his favorite hobbies is dragon poker, a game he's gotten good at, and he wins about as many hands as he loses. Some might say he has a gambling problem, playing cards as many nights as not, and it's where most of his spare marks end up going when he has a bad night. He cheats sometimes, but it's nothing worse than everyone else who's playing does, and he's careful not to get caught. Everyone may do it, but no one reacts kindly to seeing it exposed, him included. A black eye and sore ribs aren't fun the next morning, even if everyone ignores the incident as if it had never happened.
Though as a weyrbrat Tes used to make every effort to shirk his chores in favor of an afternoon lazing in the sun, he's gotten better about it and pulls his own weight when "on the clock". He only has another turn or two of trying left in him before he'll have to abandon it for good and resign himself to a life of cleaning and servitude, but at present the dream is still a possibility. He's still young enough, though not for long.

Since then, he's made no true enemies but remains wary of his brother's old friends, knowing they wouldn't pass up an invitation to beat the living snot out of him if it just happened to come their way. He can handle himself tolerably well in a fist fight, but not against more than one opponent.
He and his family by birth rarely speak, and he remains extremely attached to his foster parents and the aunties of the creche, though he keeps it to himself for fear of being thought weak and sentimental. Luckily for him, he hasn't yet had to deal with a messy break-up. He's had one experience with a man and it didn't do much for him, so he doesn't have any incentive to repeat it.
