Character Information
Name: Kalara
Gender: Female
Age/Birthday: 17.5
Orientation: Heterosexual
Location: Lateo
Rank: Beastcrafter Apprentice
Family: Janel (mother, Journeywoman Beastcrafter, 55 turns), Lored (father, a Master Beastcrafter, 57 turns), Kirel (Journeyman beastcrafter, 28 turns), Baran (Journeyman Harper, 27 turns), Delor (Journeyman beastcrafter, 24 turns [twin with Firus]), Firus (Journeyman beastcrafter, 24 turns, [twin with Delor]), Tulio (Journeyman Healer, 22 turns), Peret (Journeyman Smithcrafter, 19 turns) and Palend (Apprentice Fishercrafter, 15 turns). (All brothers)
Pets: Liren
Pet Type: Blue Firelizard
Description: Liren is a very dark, rich blue... the color of the sky at twilight. Size-wise, he's nothing impressive, a little small for a flit, in fact. However, his small size allows for limberness and agility that matches a green. He is very intelligent and responsive and has been taught to do quite a few tasks by Kalara. Of course, this might be due to the touch that Kalara has with animals, but he does seem to be very deftly able to learn things. He is very loyal to Kalara, and looks to her before doing anything, including playing with other flits.
KALARA
Appearance: Kalara appears in face to be younger than her height suggests. Quite tall for a female, she stands at five feet nine inches, though she generally stoops, so as not to tower over anyone. She is not thin, or fat, but muscular, though still with a feminine shape. Her hair is shorter than her shoulders, straight as a pin and very dark brown in color. Her face and body are darkly tanned and her face is oval in shape. She sports a small, snub nose and almond-shaped, dark brown eyes that twinkle mischeviously. Her wide mouth with thin, red lips are set in a youthful, almost chubby face, making her pretty rather than beautiful. She does not quite seem to have gained yet that sharpness of features that marks a woman from a girl. Her cheeks are always slightly flushed, making her seem even more of a child.
Personality: Kalara is, quite frankly, a lively girl. She is very outgoing and she loves to always be busy. She will never be doing nothing.
However, this doesn't mean that she always needs to be moving. She has infinite patience, and will spend hours at a time with a sick herdbeast if needed. She likes friends, and she is social, but she loves herdbeasts and animals of all kinds most. She has a gentle hand and voice with any animal.
She talks a lot, but can also listen if needed. People find her a good friend, and she is always coming up with things to do. No one is ever bored with her, unless you get her onto an animal subject. She will talk and talk and talk about animals all the day long if she can.
She is very brave, and is always the first to go into a sticky situation. She is also a protector of the small and weak. Nothing frightens her, except for large bodies of water. She cannot stand lakes or, Faranth forbid, the ocean.
Her fear of the water is mostly irrational, but is based on an incident that occurred at the age of four turns. She was wading in a lake to the south of their cothold with a few of her brothers (who were supposed to be keeping an eye on her), when she stepped off the ledge of the shallows into the deeper part of the lake. She floundered for while, swallowed water, and subsequently went unconscious for a short time before one of her brothers realized she was missing and happen to spot her under the water. He fished her out and luckily was able to clear her lungs of water and revive her before any significant damage was done. However, the psychological scar has remained with her since then.
History: Kalara was born in a small cothold that looks to Lateo WeyrHold. The seventh born in her family, she has one younger brother, in addition to the six older. She was the only girl of all eight of the children. As a result, Kalara has always been sort of a tomboy, used to rough housing and scraping herself up. She is tough, because she had to be able to hold her own against her brothers who were all mischievous, rambunctious boys. As boys often are wont to do, they did not want their little sister trying to follow them around. They tried as often as they could to discourage her from trying to be around them, but Kalara didn’t want to be left out, so she learned to just get right up and ignore whatever they were doing to torment her. After she was a bit older, her brothers decided that she was at least as good as any of them and stopped tormenting her.
Kalara has never really been in a serious relationship. It’s not that she doesn’t like boys, it’s just that the opportunity has never really presented itself and she never actively has pursued it. Especially while she lived in the cothold, most of the boys seemed to be quite afraid that her brothers would chase them down if they tried to make a move on their sister.
Life has never been very easy for Kalara. Her family has been raising herdbeasts for generations, and this has never been particularly profitable for them. Kalara grew up tending for herdbeasts, and loves them to pieces, as well as the canines that they used for herding them around. She learned to fend for herself in the wilds very early in life, and is quite independent. She actually acquired her firelizard while off on a foray into the wild at the age of 15, looking for a lost herdbeast; one of her favorites. As she followed the hoofprints, they led her to the beach, which wasn’t too far away from the cothold, and she found a nest of firelizard eggs. Unfortunately, it looked as though her Herdbeast had trampled them on its stampede across the beach. The eggs were obviously abandoned at this point, the Gold flit must have given them all up for lost to the herdbeast. One of the eggs, however, was still intact and so Kalara, after retrieving the lost herdbeast, returned for the abandoned egg, and took it back to the cothold with her. She happily watched over it until the day it hatched with her little blue flit, Liren.
She loves Liren to death, and he is similarly infatuated with her. He is not often found far from her side, tending not to be nearly as flighty as most flits. He loves to sit on Kalara’s shoulder, watching the things going on around him, or gathering things that Kalara needs from the cothold. She also trained him to help the canines bring in the herdbeasts, and he does it most effectively for having so little mass. Not many a herdbeast will stray if they think it means a firelizard going into their ear.
At the age of twelve Kalara was officially apprenticed as a Beastcrafter, and learned the craft from her father. At the age of seventeen, she was reassigned to Lateo Weyr to help care for the beasties here and learn more about the Beastcraft in a Weyr environment. She has been at Lateo for half of a turn now, and has found a new love for the beautiful dragons that soar through the skies. She has often, over this half-turn, entertained the idea of Standing at a Hatching, and often daydreams about it while she is out in the fields, tending the herdbeasts. She does her best to keep the Herdbeasts in prime condition, because she knows how integral they are to the well-being of the Weyr, and Pern, as they provide nourishment for the magnificent dragons, who in turn, keep Pern safe.
She finds the Dragonriders themselves fascinating, and enjoys talking with them about everything they’re willing to tell her. She tends to be a bit reserved around them, however, because she tends to look at them as vastly superior to herself, with all their experiences and knowledge, and of course, the fact that they were lucky enough to Impress a dragon.
