Embarrassed that he had let his anger get the better of him, and angrier still that Tevern was still attempting to take Amoare from him, he resisted the urge to bury his face in his hands.
Kaunth! Gah! the Bronzer called out, not knowing where else to turn.
Just try it, Kaunth implored him, mental voice fogged now because his mouth was full of herdbeast blood.
"We'll just try it," P'resh told her quietly, and with less chill in his voice. He planned to remain largely silent throughout the ordeal. The last thing P'resh wanted or needed was a groupful of riders-to-be who already wanted to flame him. Tightening his grip on her side, he smiled at her, forcing himself to make this work.

Feeling his voice warm a little, she managed a reassuring smile and put her hand on his nearby leg, giving it a light squeeze of thanks. Turning to the others she looked forcibly at Colten and Pleta. “Let’s attempt to have a good picnic… please? It was Tevern’s idea and I’d hate for it to be ruined.” she said giving Tevern a smile.
Tevern returned it, even as he wished she’d remove the Bronzer’s arm from around her waist. Picking up one of the wine skins, he poured a small amount into the four glasses he had brought then frowned.
“Oh me and Colten will share.” Pleta said quickly motioning for him to share the wine. She had managed to intertwine her fingers with Coltens and Tevern was suddenly feeling like he had gotten the short end of the stick.

P'resh gritted his teeth against the flood of emotions that washed through him at the sight of the smiles. Always having been a very jealous man, his eyebrows furrowed a bit, though not too much. He pulled a piece of bread from one of the meatrolls and ate it, not willing to shove it in his mouth as he usually would. Looking at Tevern, he felt a mixture of emotion, both exasperation that he was letting himself be rejected, and glee that he was, indeed, rejected.
Then there was the Pleta girl. She was vindictive as any woman, not really any different from the rest of the "garbage" around the Weyr, but to an extent, she was interesting. Not really to date, P'resh reflected, but really just to watch. Her boy, Colten was just trash, and P'resh put energy into not paying any attention at all to the boy.
And you call the girl vindictive, Kaunth said. He'd been listening to P'resh's thoughts, becoming increasingly upset at his rider's varying feelings. P'resh knew immediately that Kaunth had been talking about Pleta; Kaunth had begun to refer to Amoare by name, something that P'resh had neglected so far to tell Amoare.
Aye, but she is, Kaunth. All the females around this Weyr are just alike. It makes me sick, he said. Except, of course, Amoare. P'resh loved her.

Amoare smiled as she bit into the meatroll she had chosen, a small chat had come up and tensions seemed to be lessening… slightly. The talk had turned to the lessons they were currently taking and their chores. She listened as Colten and Pleta lead the majority of the discussion, complaining about how they felt as if they were still treated as children. Amoare didn’t fail to notice the quick glances Colten sent toward her bronzer, nor did she fail to notice Pleta looking him up and down every so often. The later colored her face.
Deciding that she didn’t like their looks toward P’resh, she turned her head way from them to find Tevern at her side. “Are you ready to stand at the next clutch?” she asked, quickly as he noticed her glance at him. It was the first question she could come up with. Seeing his smile at her, she remembered how P’resh had said something about him liking her. She found herself suddenly conscious of his gaze into her eyes and she put a little more pressure on P’resh’s leg.

P'resh felt her grip tighten on his leg and he tensed the muscle in what he hoped was a reassuring fashion. He himself had noticed Colten's and Pleta's eyes lurking over him, and he did not care. Above all, he was the only one of the group to have Impressed a dragon of any type, though he found it hard to believe that Colten would. Pleta would most likely Impress a green, if she did. And Tevern...
He's good, P'resh. He's not like the others, Kaunth told him. P'resh was intrigued that Kaunth already had an opinion on the boy.
So, what do you think, Kaunth? P'resh asked. They often wagered with each other on candidates.
Brown, Kaunth said. P'resh nodded, unaware that he was doing so visually. Brown seemed a good choice for the boy, if there was a dragonet who would like him.
Hearing the question that Amoare asked, P'resh looked up, interested in the answer. "Aye, and what do you look to Impress, lad?" he asked, wondering what the reply would be.

Amoare felt P’resh’s leg tense and she smiled to herself, happy to know she had him there. Seeing his far-off gaze and a nod out of the corner of her eye, she turned to him wishing she could hear the conversation. At his question, she turned back to Tevern curious to his answer.
“Yea, I think I’m ready to stand.” Tevern answered her happily. Hearing P’resh’s question he put his hands behind his head and let out a breath of air. “Ooh, I dunno. I’d love to ride a bonze just as much as the next candidate, but I know I’d be happy with any color.” Pursing his lips he added, “Well I hope I don’t get a green though… That’d just be weird.” he said with laughter in his eyes as he looked to Amoare once again hoping she’d fin his words comical.
Amoare did and she giggled appreciatively. “Yeah, I’ve seen male green riders. That would be weird, to be attached to a dragon of the opposite gender.” She grinned, “But then again your already weird.”
Tevern made a mock face of hurt before laughing along with her. “I’m not THAT weird.”

P'resh's eyebrow lifted at this bit of odd flirting that was occuring. He argued with himself about making up some excuse for leaving, and decided against it. He wouldn't lose face to a candidate, and Amoare would never leave him for some boy when she had P'resh himself so hooked.
I'm done hunting, Kaunth told him, sounding full and thoughrouly pleased with himself. Shall I come sit back with you and Amoare and the others? he asked.
Yes, please! P'resh said, almost yelling aloud. This whole iea had been bad on his part, agreeing to sit with these children and Amoare.
"Colten? What do you intend on Impressing?" he asked, attempting to fill the moments as Kaunth winged to the Bowl, too sated to go between.

“What kind of question is that? A Bronze of course.” Colten replied rather shortly. Standing suddenly, he held his hand out to Pleta. “We’ll c’ya later Amoare. Tevern.” he said, purposely skipping the bronzer’s name as he helped Pleta to her feet. Smiling at her, he wrapped an arm around her waist and lead her away.
Amoare’s hands were in her head rather quickly, ashamed of what she knew they had left them for. Bringing her head back up, she smiled at the two boys that now flanked her. “Well…” she said a little exasperated. She was ashamed of how Colten had acted toward P’resh and she made a mental note to herself to apologize later.
“Heh…” Tevern said in reply as he ran his hand thru his hair. Looking from Amoare to P’resh and back again he sighed. “Ya know… I kinda have a few things I need to do…” He wasn’t at all happy with how things were turning out and he knew he didn’t stand a chance against the bronzer. Not while he was there anyways.
Amoare instantly protested. As if she didn’t feel bad enough already about how things turned out and now she was chasing Tevern away. “What? I thought you had the day cleared??” she asked quickly. “We don’t mind the company…” she added with a glance toward P’resh.

Inwardly, P'resh sighed, but he shrugged and invited Tevern to come give Kaunth a bath.
I had one this morning, Kaunth remembered.
I know, but you need a new one anyone anyway, you just hunted, P'resh told him. Anything to just not sit on the ground here. He rose to his feet.
"My bronze just hunted. I'm going to bathe him, Amoare. Tevern, you can come if it pleases you." He almost began to stride away, but didn't. He knew it would be rude to walk away from them.

Amoare found herself insanly happy with P’resh’s offer to her friend. With Pleta gone, Amoare thru her arms around her Bronzer in an embrace before turning to Tevern. “You’ll help won’t ya? It’s a ton of fun.”
Tevern’s eyes danced at the idea and his excitement was enough to let him shrug off the sudden affection he seen Amoare give the rider. To help wash a bronze! He’d been raised in one of the holds and was still growing use to seeing so many dragons in one place, one of the reasons he was always looking to Amoare for help. The Weyr was run much different than Terra Hold where he was raised.
“I’d love to help!” he said happily. Looking down at the mats and food he frowned. “Should we pick these up first? Or can they wait?”

P'resh laughed at the boy's question. He was obviously a holder's son, then. "I'll get one of the Weyr's many drudges to get them." He turned to face the doorway to the Lower Caverns. "Oi! Yevera! Send someone to pick these mats up!" he yelled to one of the head drudges. She waved at him, blushing. "There. They'll be gone before the scatids can start in on the leftovers." He nodded his head in the direction if the river, where Kaunth was already soaking half-in and out of the water on the banks. "Looks like he's about ready."
I have a bad itch on my belly, the dragon said in reply. P'resh relayed this message to the others, and he started to walk to the river, waving at the other two to follow him.

Tevern grinned broadly as he used his own long legs to walk just a step behind the bronzer. Amoare found herself affected by his excitement as she walked between the two men. Upon reaching the sands, she took off her sandels and began to roll up her loose pantlegs, happy she had decided to wear a tank that day. In moments she was ready and glanced over at Tevern.
Tevern had followed Amoare’s lead and rolled up his own pants. Instead of tucking in his shirt, however, he simply pulled it over his head with ease. His young, yet well formed muscles were easy to see with the cloth gone. Amoare blushed and turned to look at P’resh, finding that man topless as well. His, however, was a body she’d seen before and was comfortable with. His own muscles a personal favorite of hers. She smiled.
Following P’resh into the water, Amoare glanced back to find Tevern only ankle-deep in the water and a frown on his face. She tilted her head and laughed. “What’s up Tevern? Come on!”
“Are you sure its ok? I’m not…” he paused, looking from dragon to rider and back again. “I’ve never bathed a dragon before and I just don’t want to mess anything up…”

P'resh once again laughed at the boy's words. "Candidate, I find it hard to believe that you could 'mess anything up' on this dragon when the cold of bewteen doesn't." He bent down to the bucket that he had taken from the banks of the river and threw the boy a hard-bristled brush. "If it makes you any less afraid," he said, putting a slight emphasis on the last word, "you can clean his back, where the hide is hardest."
Now he faced his dragon, and looked for the spot on Kaunth's belly that so itched. One he found it, he dug his short nails in, knowing that very little else would be felt. Kaunth whistled underwater at the relief, blowing water up into the air over the two candidates. Sorry, Kaunth mumbled so everyone would hear, including Tevern. P'resh handed Amoare a brush that was thick-bristled and shaped in an "O" fashion.
"Find any rough spots and scrape them away," he said, smiling at her. "Don't worry, you can't hurt him." Once again above the water, Kaunth politely rumbled his reassurances.

Tevern blushed slightly at P’resh’s words, but quickly recovered more determined than he had started. Catching the brush easily, he followed Amoare closer to the bronze. The sudden spout of water caught him off guard and he laughed at Amoare’s yelp of surprise. Finding himself now soaked, he was even more surprised to find a voice mumble sorry in his head. Or did it?
Deciding he must have heard things he waded over to the bronze and softly placed a hand on the hard hide that covered his back. Scrubbing away at the hide, he found himself rather pleased with himself. To be washing a bronze! It made his heart ache even more for the day he’d impress.
Amoare had taken the circle brush from P’resh with a loving smile. “Thank you dear.” she said as she began to run a hand over the hide in search of the rough spots the older man had spoke of. Finding one she scrubbed at it furiously as she started up a conversation. “So what have you been up to today P’resh? Besides napping in the sun with your dragon.” she asked playfully.

P'resh smiled. "Well, I fed the kitten this morning, a task in itself, and then petted him for a bit. Kaunth and I did personal drills, you know, without the rest of the wing. We had a swim after that, and then we hoisted our tired bones onto the banks and had a bit of a nap, before you and that silly girl came over." He scraped a bit of flaky hide from Kaunth's tail. "Are you implying that we have been lazy today, m'dear?" he asked mischievously.
Tell the boy 'just a bit to the right,' Kaunth said. P'resh relayed the message, and was glad to see the quiet boy enjoying himself. P'resh knew what it was like to be rejected for another man, and while he felt no sorrow for the boy, he felt the mildest twinge of sympathy.
With this many people, P'resh thought, Kaunth will be done in no time. Then it will simply be a matter of getting Amoare from this boy so we can have time to ourselves.
Getting an idea, P'resh asked, "What are your plans for this evening, love?"
