K'mar yawned, tired from the last night's celebration of the Fidelis Class. So many strong-looking graduates, and Ardeo had been fortunate with their pick of weyrlings. They had gotten all the weyrlings he and T'sum had hoped for without arguement from the other Wings. He could already tell that their next Wing Practice would be a good one. Now they just needed to think of a Practice that would easily allow the new Dragonriders to fit in but also challenge the entire Wing. Once the newcomers got a hang of things, K'mar knew their Wing would be unstoppable. Then again, there were those from Duro and Bloodchar who were much more competitive. What if--no...He shook his head at the thought. The Weyrleader would never approve of it. Or would he?
Just as the thought triggered on another idea, a man's voice called out to the Wingsecond loud enough to pull K'mar from his new thoughts. "K'mar, m'boy! Come find a seat beside me!" The older rider, D'ran, was retiring this year, and yet he still had as much exuberance now as he did when he first Impressed, not that K'mar knew from sight. D'ran was much older and grayer...probably late 60's. K'mar urgently wanted to work on this new idea of his, but he didn't want to appear rude to his old friend. "Thank you, Sir--" "I told you to call me D'ran! You make me sound so old." The Wingsecond grinned as they shook hands and he took a seat across from the bluerider. "So have you taken up your plan with the Weyrleaders?" D'ran laughed and shook his head.
"Of course not! With all the events that are about to happen, I think I'll wait awhile first." K'mar raised his eyebrow in question. "Events? Like what?" Surely he would have heard of them, right? If they were big enough to call for the Weyrleaders' attention, then most of the Weyr should have heard. "Yes, m'boy! The Hatching at Lateo has started. You are planning on going to the Feast tonight, right?" The bronzer blinked in surprise, then tried to hide it away from D'ran. "Of course I knew. And I'll ask T'sum if he would like to join me as well. I'm sure the Wingleader would enjoy a night out of Sodalis full of dancing and singing." K'mar grinned, knowing he would get that bronzerider to dance if he had to ask every woman to his taste...and if not then he would just get that man to drink some.
"Will you be going?" D'ran shook his head and laughed merrily. "No, I've got a few things to take care of here. It's easier to finish them off when the Weyr is practically empty." K'mar eyed him curiously, but there was nothing suspicious in the old man's eyes. Probably some business with the Headwoman or Weyrhealer. He had been visiting both of them quite often. "Can I help you with anything? Maybe that way you can at least spend a few candlemarks there." Again, D'ran shook his head. "No, no. I don't want to keep you here when there will be a party at Lateo. Too many lovely ladies will miss out on you." K'mar laughed, but he was intending on "looking" for any women while he was there. Just to dance and have a good time. T'sum would probably just enjoy being back in his old Weyr again.
"Well, I hope you accomplish your plans tonight. But what other events are there?" D'ran shifted a bit more nervously for this one. Clearing his throat, the bluerider answered, "The Queen is close to Flight. You can tell just by looking at her. It's going to be soon, I tell you." K'mar's eyes widened. That's right. He had noticed that a day or two ago, but he hadn't put too much thought into it. Weyrleadership flight. It was very important to Sodalis that the male who caught Caliath was right for the position. "Are you going to try and Fly her?" D'ran coughed while shaking his head. "No? But why not?" Of all people, D'ran seemed fit for the position. He always had good ideas of how to improve the Weyr. "I'm getting too old for things such as those. The Weyr needs a young man with plenty of strength to care for Sodalis now with Lateo becoming so strong."
K'mar's concerned frown cracked into a grin. That man always seemed so competitive when it came between the two Weyrs. "But young men could also ruin the Weyr with their inexperience and arrogance." D'ran grinned. "There are men who are young and quite able to take over the Weyr without its destruction." The bronzer laughed nervously. He wouldn't tell anyone, but he was nervous about the Flight. So many riders would be there to try and catch Caliath, but who would win her in the end? K'mar flew last year and Beodith had won. Would the outcome be the same? He sighed and pushed the matter aside. Those thoughts would have to wait until the time came. He had too much work to sort through with the next Wing Practice coming up soon. He needed to talk to T'sum first, though.
"Well, thanks for the talk, D'ran. I need to work out a few things right now for the next Wing Practice. Talk to you soon?" The bluerider smiled and gave an affirmative nod as K'mar stood. The Ardeo Table was empty, and the bronzer immediately took the seat on the end. It was his favorite seat, mostly because it was easier to get to when he wanted to get more food and come back. K'mar pulled out his hides and tried to picture the next Practice until he had it memorized in his head. Yes, that would do. Now to sort it out with T'sum. But for now, he could relax. After a deep sigh, K'mar relaxed his eyes shut for a few seconds, although the few seconds turned into minutes as he began to be lulled into a light sleep. Just what he deserved after going one night without sleeping after so much drink and dance.
