((morning after cuts & bruises)
It was false dawn when the dark haired man began to stir. He was conscious of being in his own weyr, he felt the light touch of his sleeping brown… and something else, something else just wasn’t right. R’lan scooted closer to the warmth radiating from under his sheets, tightening his grip on the soft form.
A damp rainy autumn morning was made for sleeping in, the brown rider couldn’t bring himself to get up. It would be a day to check equipment, check over dragons, and run drills on paper. He could be late. The sent of sandlewood caught him off guard, and he opened an eye. One arm was trapped under her head, Shereae’s light strawberry blonde hair was loose and brushing his chest and face. R’lan was afraid to move lest he wake her, ‘Beautiful.’ She was stretched out against the length of him, her backside spooned against his groin. His free arm was resting under her breast while he cupped her unconsciously. It took him a moment to recall the events of the night before. ‘Did we?’ The way the sheets were tangled around them both the answer could have been yes. But she still had on her clothes. Underwear covered her hips, he could feel himself brush against cloth instead of skin. Her breasts weren’t bare, his hand held fabric. R’lan gave a half groan as he felt himself tighten.
No. Came the sleepy tone of his brown. He grumbled deeply, his form of a yawn.
Closing his eyes again, R’lan just lay there. Faranth help him, he still wanted her.

Shereae mumbled and rolled away, so she would not face the window anymore. It didn't take much to wake her, not at all. Slowly, she remembered where she was, and she smiled. When she had rolled, she had gone to her other side, facing R'lan and becoming just a tad closer to him. He had already stirred, and she realized that that was what had awoken her, not the dim lit through the window. Keeping his arm under her head, she laid and arm over his side and snuggled into his chest. It was damp, and even though only false dawn was showing, she could tell it would be a rainy day. A chill ran through her, and she cuddled towards him, seeking his warmth. She was still barely awake, and could fall back asleep, if he didn't say anything to her or get up. She hoped he could stay in a little while.

Feeling the woman turn, R’lan smiled and opened his eyes again. “Morn’n beautiful.” The brown rider ran his fingers down her spine, enjoying the feel of her pulling closer to him. He tried to smile, but was reminded quickly of his spilt lip.

"Mmm," she said, not opening her eyes as he drew her closer. "Is it marnin' a'ready?" she asked. She smiled at him, finally openingh her eyes. It was still very dark, more dark than light, really. "You don't have to go anywhere, do you?" She shivered as his fingers ran down her spine and moved in closer to him. She scrunched down, enjoying the feeling of his sheets on her bare legs. Looking up at him, she crinkled her nose. "You're very warm. It's cold." She usually spoke in small sentences in the morning.

“Nope. Not for awhile anyways.” The brown rider moved his fingers from the woman’s lower back to her hip, absently tracing a line down her thigh. “It is cooling down… damp.” R’lan raised up a bit and found the edge of the sheet, pulling it over her shoulders. “Is that better Redhair?” Sliding his hand under her leg he brought it toward him.

She nodded, and closed her eyes again. Good. Maybe they could just lay for a while. She liked to lay in the morning, and since it was so early, she wouldn't have chores for another couple hours, at least. He pulled the sheets up round her shoulders, and she smiled and shivered. "Uh huh," she said, nodding again and giggling. And she didn't resist when he brought her leg towards him. On the contrary, she laid it over the side of his leg and sighed. Everything was so contented right now.

R‘lan still held her tight, but his mind was on something else. “You don’t think I am worth it?” The brown rider furrowed his brow, a look of deep confusion and some hurt playing through his eyes and on his face. The words Shereae had said last night still sounded in his head, eating on him. It wasn’t the greatest timing, but…
Nylath chuckled low inside R’lan’s head. Trying to ruin the moment?

Shereae sighed. Fall, Flame, and Shards, she thought. She opened her eyes to the pain and hurt in his. "It's not that I don't think you are worth it. It's that I want to make sure it is. I don't really think I made myself very clear last night." It felt like her head was about to explode. Early morning simply was not her time for conversation, and especially not for something as important as this. "I want to be sure, if I share myself with you, that there is something behind it besides just lust. This is something near and dear to my heart, R'lan, and I can't just give it up on whimsy." She took a deep breath. Her eyes closed involuntarily, and she forced them back open. Why do we have to talk about this now? She looked up at his piercing blue eyes. He really was handsome, and he did deserve her favors, but she didn't want to let him walk all over her, either. And if he couldn't take the fact that she wouldn't sexually favor him without a couple of sacrifices on his part, then she could find someone who would. She didn't say that, though.

“You have done a wonderful job telling me why you won’t, but not once have you told me Redhair what I have to do to earn your favor.” R’lan propped himself up on his arm the braided band he wore around his wrist slid down, digging into the muscle of his lower arm slightly . “If you want Ceera gone… done. Oesella too. I told you I can’t promise you anything, and I can’t. I don’t believe in making promises I might not be able to keep.”
He let out a sigh, “How does one ever know if it is more than mere lust? Isn‘t that how all relationships begin?” She made him fell more than anyone ever had, but he wasn’t ready to let her know that. It didn’t occur to him that Shereae might feel the same.

"You bring up a very good point," she said, red tingeing her cheeks. She hadn't thought about telling him once, she had just thought about what he had to do. "Well...." She trailed off. How do you tell a lustful, sexual man like this that he had to give it all up for your affections? she thought. "Yes, Ceera and Oesella...but all the rest, too. I mean dedication, R'lan. I need to know you're going to be there for me when I need you, not just on sexual terms, either. I just need you," she told him. She was tired of fish-tailing around in circles over this. Already she didn't think he'd do it. "I understand, and really love that you don't make promises you can't keep. I love that about you. I guess that's why I didn't tell you, because I didn't want to make you feel guilty. I'm sorry."

Listening to what Shereae had to say proved to be harder than the brown rider first thought. He was fascinated by the way her eyebrow moved when she spoke… he brushed his thumb across it.
“I’m glad you’ve found something to love, but the way you make it sound I am a fiend. Only wanting you for what you can give me.”
He slowly kissed her cheek. There was no way to get around telling her... he was going to have to take the first leap and he didn't much like it. “I do care for you. You have managed to get under my skin. And aye, I‘ll admit I want to bed you."
The brown rider ran his hand down her shoulder, her arm... taking her hand he brought it to his lips. "But that‘s not all you are to me, A woman merely to warm my bed is easy enough to find.”
He sighed, he hadn‘t done such a good job in telling her what was weighing on his heart.
“You don’t realize do you darlin’? Since meeting you, I‘ve had no other. I’ve wanted no other.”
The brown rider had already stopped seeing his lovers. Oesella would be the only one he would miss, he cared for Oesella, but only because she had given him two fine sons and was a good woman. They had never shared a great love for one another, only companionship.
Somehow R’lan didn’t feel like he was giving up all that much and it surprised him. It was easier than what he had thought it would ever be, it was telling Shereae that was the problem. He had wanted to know she felt the same. If she really did care about him; she had avoided his advances for so long… it had shaken his nerve to the point he had been close to giving up on her last night.
His eyes half laughed at her as he laid a finger across her lips to quiet her. “I’m not finished.
There is something I have to know. Do you understand what I am? What I do?"
The lines in his forehead creased as worry marred his features. "I could die today, Redhair.”
His worry was more toward seven turns from now though. If A’dan, J’ren, E’mion, and G’llahar were right, Thread was goin’ to happen sooner than any of them dared think. ‘She needs a holder to settle with, someone with marks to spend on her… and time to give her. Someone to grow old with, but I’m too selfish to let her go.’ It shamed him.
“I am a dragon rider, Redhair. In seven turns give or take, I’m going to be flying Thread. Dragons and Riders are going to die. We can’t fool ourselves. If I was to promise you forever, it would be a lie.
I don‘t know how many turns Nylath and I will have. How long it will take for luck to run out.”
If he didn’t have anything to live for other than himself and Nylath he would never think about dieing, if he died he died... he had nothing worth while to loose living just in the moment. That feeling was rapidly changing though thanks to a woman with strawberry blonde hair. That had him more than worried, if you wanted to live you couldn’t be afraid to die.
The man buried his face in her hair, the thought of what awaited them, their children, their grand children sent chills up his spine. Quiet reigned as the drops of moisture dripped off of the slate roof.

Shereae had started to reply when he paused for a moment, but she quieted when he told her he wasn't done talking. She knew she hated it when folks interrupted her.
She sat quietly through his explanation. When he was done and properly buried in her hair, she smiled and wrapped her arms around him. "But R'lan, I don't care. If all we had was a sevenday to spend together, I'd still want to spend it with you. No amount of time spent together is a waste, no matter how short or long. If we had an hour, I'd still spend it with you and be proud to say I looked to you and afterwards, not regret the time or think of it as a waste." She smiled at him, though she wasn't sure he saw it from his vantage point within her hair. "And such is the life of any woman of a dragonrider. I figure they must live day to day, especially with Thread Falling, as it soon will."
He had indeed surprised her when he told her he had been with no other woman since their first meeting, and she was grateful and appreciative. "But I do want to spend my moments with you. I like you, R'lan. And I'm not sure I can just stand by and let some other woman claim you."

In those several moments of quiet peace with her arms around him, R’lan realized he could have pushed her last night. He could have broken her resolve, taken her… but it wasn’t what he wanted, as much as he needed her. The way she had stilled in his arms scared him more than he wished to admit even to himself. Guilt flooded him. She had consigned herself to the fact he would take her, and then looked at him with trusting eyes. He never wanted her inner fire to be smothered out, and by his own hand he had almost done just that.
He raised back up on his elbow, but had to look away from her, trying to hide the wave of emotion that threatened to boil him as her words soaked into his thick skull.
“I’ll be here for you as long as I am able. As long as I breath.” He didn’t know what the future held for either one of them. She wanted to ride gold, he would stand behind her. He might wish to kill the bronze rider that touched her… but he would be there for her as long as Faranth allowed him.
Some of his quiet humor returned, his usually unfoulable confidence restored. “And just what would you do about it.?”

She laughed and sighed simultaneously. "I know you'll always be there for me. What I want is for you to say you'll always be mine." She blushed again, fully aware that she might be pushing a few boundaries. Taking a deep breath, she attempted to still her racing heart. "I don't know. But I'd like to be blind so I wouldn't have to see you with another woman. Maybe I'd ask to transfer." She frowned thoughtfully. "It's a good question, really. I don't know what I'd do, but it wouldn't be a happy occasion, to be sure."
She frowned again, this time displeasured. "Why won't you look at me? Are you angry with me?" She knew it! Now she had pushed her boundaries too far, telling him that she wanted him to be hers. "Shards and shells."

The tall man’s jaw almost hit the floor, he turned back to face his woman.
Is that not what I have been saying to her? He was at a loss for words, had she not heard him?
“Sear the Shell.” R’lan rubbed a hand through his hair, making it stand on end. “Fall take me, I’m not mad at you, Redhair. I‘ve been trying to say just that.” He wrapped her in his arms, holding her.
Mine? I thought so… but then I feel you as well as hear your words. Nylath wasn’t sure what had happened to his rider, but his manner had changed in a mere matter of heart beats and it was because of the woman nestled close to His. The brown sought her out, nudging at her mind softly. He knew her name well, it had been at the forefront of his rider’s thoughts as far back as memory allowed.
“I’ve never settled down for any woman, Shereae. But then, I’ve never met anyone I couldn’t live without. I‘ve not loved anyone before. ”
I’ve said it Ny. I’ve put it on the line, and now lets see if she finishes gutting me.
The brown rumbled softly trying to comfort and encourage.
Shereae? In a quiet voice, a voice much like R’lan’s only deeper the brown spoke. He was shy, tentative. Seldom did he speak with anyone but his own rider. He liked the woman though. She knew how to scratch his eye ridges.
