The green rider sat alone in the Weyrhall at an unusual time of day, her eyes downcast as she stared dully at her cup of klah. Most of the wings were out for drills or the riders enjoying themselves on the beach, but Ryia sat by herself at the common tables. Usually she would have taken her usual seat at the guarded Sidus table, but today she felt like she deserved anything but that place of honor. K’var and her wingmates were out for drills, so why was this woman sitting all alone when she should have been with her wing? The woman pushed a lock of her black hair from her dark eyes, sighing. Her wingleader, Lateo’s Weyrleader, had excused her from practice that day, but not because of misbehavior on her part, but because of concern on his part.
Somehow, the gypsy seemed to have noticed the dejected, worn look the green rider seemed to be wearing lately, the flat tone that dominated her once lovely and bright voice. Something was deeply affecting her, he said, and he wanted her to relax and come to peace with it.
The problem was that Ryia couldn’t find peace within herself, though! “Shards…” She mumbled softly, wiping quickly at her dark eyes as tears somehow found themselves rolling down her cheeks. The wingrider rested her face in her mocha-colored hands, trying to hold back the sobs that now racked her body. The green was soon weeping, and couldn’t make herself stop.
My rider, what is wrong? Chalyth asked, her voice low and definitely concerned. She had never seen her rider act like this, and the lightly-colored green did not like it when Hers was upset. Why do you cry so? Please, Mine, what is the matter?
The wingrider shook her head silently, trying to calm down. She truly wished she could tell her beloved green what troubled her so, but the problem was she didn’t know herself. Ryia had taken a deep, bottomless case of depression lately, and there was no reason nor person that she could find the lay the blame on. The dark-haired woman had been like this for at least two sevendays, but it was only recently that she had taken to crying at erratic intervals. I…I don’t know, Chal. She choked out. For a moment, another wave of sadness hit her, and she had to fight to gain enough control to speak. For some reason, I’ve just been feeling really down lately….no real reason. I’m so sorry to worry you like this. The green rider sighed and wiped her tears once more, her eyes red and swelled from her sobs.
