This is NOT complete. It is a work in progress. I have to partially rely on EARTH’S history for references. If something is wrong, please alert me to it.
The General History:
Middle Ages:
Around 500 A.D. western civilization began to come from the time called "The Dark Ages," Christianity was supposedly the source of much music. Around that time, Pope Gregory I supposedly compiled the Gregorian Chant. What a original name. In the Reinasance Period, Dance music became popular. Not long afterward we arrived with Opera and other music.
On this world, Music is composed by Harper’s, known as Bard’s on Earth. Harper’s have several ranks. Apprentice, Junior Journey(wo)man, Senior Journey(wo)man, and Master. The Harper’s can remain in their Hall and preform specific duties for a while, but eventually most go to a Hold or Weyr, as with other Crafters.
Within the Harper Hall there are branches of the art. The Drummer’s will run or work at Drum Heights, sending messages long distances quickly. Vocal Expert’s may not learn anything other than song, while a very bad vocalist may be a excellant Gitarest. The Crafter’s can learn more then one thing. They usually stay until Journeyman status. Then they either leave to find a Hold or continue on.
Apprentice’s take lesson’s with a Master or Journeyman/woman. Some Master’s are tough teachers, other’s fun. Apprentices are higher in rank then Drudges, but lower than most other Ranking peoples of the Craft.
Junior Journeymen/women have “just walked the tables” or just has just become a Journey(wo)man. They are higher in rank then Apprentices, but lower then most other peoples of the Craft. They sometime’s help with classes, teaching Apprentices.
Senior Journey(wo)men are senior to most other but the Masterharper and Masters. Their peer’s may or may not try to compete for attention with them. They are sometime’s in control of small classes. They may or may not continue their education. If they do not, they may go to a Hold or Weyr.
Master’s are usually older then the other Crafters. They are often in charge of numerous classes. They are in dire need of sleep, for most Pernese demand their time again and again. Most will teach classes, but a few may be Harper’s at Hold’s or Weyr’s.
The Masterharper is the Master in charge of the entire Craft. They are usually beloved by their Crafters. They have ultimate power in decisions. They usually do not have time to teach classes, but may or may not take on a Apprentice or Jounrney(wo)man to help them in tasks. They are highly respected, even if not loved by all.
The Making of Instruments: [/u]
The Guitar: The guitar is composed of shaped wood hollowed out, producing a strumming sound. Six- to eight strings are attached, stretching across a small hole in the center of a curvy body-piece, all the way up a long, thin neck.
The Harp: The Harp is a shaped piece of metal, wood, or other hard material. The shape is very short to taller. Strings are strung across it vertically. It is played by placing on one’s lap and strumming.
The Pipes:
Vocal Information:
There are quite a few variations of vocal range. Soprano, bass, tenor, (contr)alto, baritone and mezzo-soprano. The human vocal range can reach much higher or lower by notorious individuals, but these are the average vocal ranges. The lowest is bass; the highest soprano. Tenor and contralto hold the medium ranges, being neither high nor low.
For productions, bass vocalists are generally given mae or masculine parts, such as a man or a bear. However, young boy’s part’s may be given to a mezzo-soprano vocalist, the same vocalist might get the part of a elderly woman. However, a young girl or a young woman to a older woman might be given a mezzo-soprano or a soprano, depending on their personality. A rough female character might even be a contralto. A young, frisky animal might be given a tenor. Baritones in general might be given characters that are inbetween manhood and boyhood, or the part’s of medium- to large-sized animals. But a sorprano vocalist would not get the part of a gruff male.
Some young male’s may have high voices like young girl’s. Once both gender’s age, their voice’s deepen, though usually only slightly for the female. A male could go from a soprano voice at a young age to a baritone at a older age. However, some people are able to hold two vocal ranges. Tenor’s can sing a few, or even all, soprano or mezzo-soprano notes, and vice-versa. The smae works in roups of two or three. Baritone and bass can imitate each other cometimes, as can baritone and tenor, tenor and contralto, contralto and mezzo-soprano and mezzo-soprano and soprano. While this may not be encouraged, it can come in handy. A bass, in reality, could actually hit a very low soprano note.
Lyrical Information:
Some Hapers like to ‘tune’ or make up song’s with or without lyrics. This may not be alway’s highly encouraged, but it is a fact.
Music Making/Harpering/Barding:
Generally Harper’s are the storytellers, historians, and entertainers of the peoples of Pern. They are not alway’s all of the above, but some may be. Some specilize in one certain aspect. Song’s are passed down from generation to generation, as is historical memoriam in the form of song. While this is not the best way to pass it down, it is the way the Harpers conduct it.
