The mists settled around the grassy hills as the sunlight broke across the horizon. As far as he could see there were green meadows and trees and the most perfect runners. Then as Hanen turned he saw a red spot fading in the distance...upon closer examintaion it got larger and larger until the red seeped into the once blue skies and the green fields and trees were barren. The ground looked burnt. That was when the little girl appeared. She looked no more than a few turns in age, possible younger than that, her blonde curls bobbed as she waved at him. She approached him though all she said was, "I believe. " Then the mists came back encircling him in a shroud of darkness. Hanen woke suddenly. Sweat covered him and his blanket was tangled. Hanen had been sleeping badly lately. Thoughts of the future seemed to be getting to him. If only he could get through one night without some for of strange dream. They never realy made complete sense. Standing he saw Daze had been woken by his dream as well. She was highly agitated and kept showing him vague pictures of him in his sleep. Finally she landed on his head as it was the highest perch in the room.

What would it take to finally get the others to understand that nothing they did would get her to cooperate? They all pushed on her to "do her best", but just because she could didn't mean she would. For Great Faranth's sake, she had had enough of everyone. She wasn't going to change and they would just have to deal with that. Veralidaine sighed and ran her fingers through soft, chocolate locks. It was too dark to make out any features, but her eyes still had a chilling emerald glow, sweeping down the hallway in anger. This would have been one of the last places she expected to be, seeing as that most could not trust her. Yet here she was, strolling down the corridor of the nursery to check up on everything.
Was everyone asleep? Check. Was there anything there to disturb their sleep? None. Check. Was this getting boring? Check. The green rider stopped and casually leaned back against the wall. Maybe if she snuck out now to get to the Sea no one would catch her. There was no one really watching her anyway. She pushed herself off the wall, and at the same time something outside of her own movements broke her concentration. Someone was awake. She could hear definite stirring and tossing on the bed as it made a small but high-pitched squeaking noise. Daine turned to look down the hallway and then started back the way she had come. At the next door on her right, the bed inside creaked and footsteps could be heard on the stone floor. So this was it. The boys' room.
Without even a knock, she opened the door and waltzed inside. The boy looked to be no more than twelve or thirteen, fourteen at most. What was he doing awake? Not that she cared or anything, but if they found him awake while she was on duty then she would surely get penalized for yet another "mistake" on her behalf. Her hands rushed to her hips and she looked down at him with an accusing stare. "And why are you up, kid?" She dismissed the flit within a moment and decided to pull the boy out to the hallway to prevent waking anyone else up. "What woke you up?" This time it was a much softer tone after realizing that he wasn't one of the people that angered her so much. She could at least try to be nice for once.

Hanen looked at the woman a bit wide eyed. Shard it, now everyone would know... after being saved from drwining by a girl this was the last thing he needed. "I errr... well I was just..." Daze flew over to the rider checking her out, the little green liked attention and thought she could get some by landing on the rider's shoulder.
He realized that he was at least in his undergarments. Hanen didn't much care for authority figures but the woman looked like she meant business. Perhaps he should tell her to avoid getting any extra chores. His dark eyes looked black in the limited light and he was very glad suddenly of how tall he was.
Sure the fact that he was sweaty didn't look good. Then again his sheets were twisted too. Wait...that wasn't going to help him unless he told the truth. Glancing at the walls he tried to avoid answering the question.

Daine stared at him until her eyes practically fell out of their sockets. Nothing? Not a word had come from him that explained his being awake. She didn't care, really! All he needed to say was that he woke up without meaning to and promised to go back to sleep. Period. And yet somehow he made this all so difficult that she wanted to just give him a shove back inside and let him figure it out on his own time. She bit her tongue to fight from saying anything rude, hoping he would say something, and fast. Instead, he just turned and stared at the walls. Her foot tapped impatiently on the floor as her hands tightened on her hips. "Look, kid, I'm not asking for a lot. Just tell me why you were up, that you promise to go back to sleep, and I'll leave you alone."
She squinted in the darkness to try and make out any of his features that she might recognize. He was pretty tall, but--"Shards!" Daine fell backwards as the flit tried to land on her shoulder. Where did she come from? Oh, right. She did remember seeing the flit, but it had been forgotten when she was deciding what to do with the weyrbrat. Veralidaine glared at the flit, but slowly went back to her usual icy stare. It wasn't really the fire lizard's fault that she hadn't been paying attention to her, but at the moment Daine was just trying to take out her anger on someone. "Sorry," she muttered. Looking back at the weyrbrat, she spoke a bit louder. "So?"

Ahh well he hadn't meant for that to happen. He actually felt bad that Daze had thrown the woman off balance. Watching her reaction he realized she was still waiting for a straight answer. Not that he really cared but he figured if he told her a lie it would be better than the truth. He didn't want word getting out about his dreams. "Daze woke me. She was agitated." The firelizard chirped a bit at the rider. She was as always a lively little thing. "Sorry to have caused any trouble. May I go get some water?" He was trying to play innocent which generally worked.

Daine let out a sigh of relief as he answered. Finally. It was a good enough excuse that she wouldn't have to ask any further questions. She wasn't a nosy authoritive figure like the others were when they spoke with her. Rather, she just didn't really care about the other person's personal life. That was why it's called personal. She nodded and waved to the door. "Alright, now that this had been settled, just go back to bed." But she hadn't expected that he would want a glass of water. What next? If she let him go and someone caught sight of him wandering the halls, she would surely get a mouthful. And she couldn't just say no to such a simple request.
The green rider eyed him for a moment. Was he doing this on purpose? No, of course not! She shook her head as if to rid herself of those thoughts and cleared her throught. "Fine, but make it quick. I'm coming with you just to be sure, so lets make it fast, got it?" She switched her gaze to the green flight. "I assume you're coming as well? Make sure you're quiet." Good thing Prull wasn't here or he would surely be making a mess of things. That brown just never wanted to be around lately though, and that was just fine with her while she was doing chores. But that didn't mean she wanted nothing to do with him. Why wasn't he there when she slept, like the green flit was? It wasn't that hard to show he cared. What was she getting all sad about? She had Wesayath to keep her company, and that was just enough. She smiled briefly, but it was gone before anyone could catch it. "Lets get moving." Daine started walking down the hall, knowing he would probably either rush up in front or hang back.

"Alright then." Hanen said as if he would have gotten a glass of water anyway. He quickly caught up with the rider and decided he might as well be cordial. "If she bothers you let me know. She is still very young , not yet half a Turn, so she can be a bit clingy." Hanen said. He knew what he was talking about because he had read all about them in the records.
"I'm Hanen by the way. Sorry to have been an inconvenience." He knew how riders looked down on the Weyrbrats. Not that he cared much because one day he would be out of here and on with his life. All he cared about at the moment was cooling down and having his glass of water. He was terribly unsettled by his dream. The problem was that it was always the same dream.

Daine shook her chocolate locks from side to side. "No, no. She just startled me is all." The rider turned and realized how he stayed right next to her rather than in front or behind. Well wasn't this interesting. She smirked, not that any could tell in the dark, but she still wasn't quite sure about this water bit. The green rider continued walking in silence, not bothered by it at all. She never really had an awkward silence before since she was always comfortable with it. Silence only meant less trouble for her. But Hanen spoke too soon. She sighed and ran her hand through her hair and then dropped it back to her side. Hanen. Nope, that name didn't sound familiar.
She didn't know many people, and those she did at least get introduced to she would forget their names almost immediately. That wasn't her doing. She was just bad with names. "No problem." Daine ended it there. She wasn't much for small talk, but she also wasn't fond of just handing her name out to people. What did he need to know of it anyway? They walked on in silence for most of the rest of the way until she continued as if she had never stopped. "Daine." It couldn't hurt anybody, and it just goes to show that she could always change her mind about things. Veralidaine was her full title, but she hated being called that by anyone other than her close friends. Basically, no one.

Hanen nodded as if accepting the silence. He wasn't big on small talk himself, especially when he was hiding something. She had a pretty name, no doubt his sister would have liked it. Hanen didn't think she was going to give it for a while there. As they approached the kitchens he wondered if she was insociable for a reason. She probably had the night shift for a reason too. Not that he thought she was a bad rider, btu perhaps someone who got into a little trouble... which would explain her suspicion of him.
Walking into the kitchen Hanen knew exactly where the clean cups were and the water. It did not take him long at all to down a glass. The fact that he had found all of it in the dark was hard to imagine. He gave the simple explaination, "My mother is a cook." After he drank he splashed a bit of water on his face. He probably looked terrible. As usual after a dream like that.

She stopped near the entrance to the Kitchen and waited silently for him to get his glass of water. Daine couldn't help but be a bit surprised at how quickly he had found the glass and the water without running into anything in the dark. But she passed it aside with a slow nod when he gave his explanation. "I see." Mine? Daine blinked. "What?" Mine! The rider quickly recovered and turned her thoughts to Wesayath while still keeping an eye on Hanen. Yes? What are you doing? I'm on night patrol at the Nursery, remember? How long have you been asleep? ...Nevermind, don't answer that. I'll be out in alittle while, just stay quiet until then.
Wesayath mumbled something inaudible and Daine chose to ignore it. She could talk to Wes later, or at least once the weyrbrat was back in bed. "Come on, lets head back." When she saw him approach, she squinted again when something about him looked different. Was he...wet? How was he supposed to go to bed dripping wet? Then his bed would be wet and he would catch cold and there were so many ways that she could be blamed. Daine sighed. "You're wet." She paused as if giving him time to speak, but decided against it and continued. "You should dry off first. Do you have a change of garments in that room of yours? If so you should change into them and dry off."
This would be a good time to go outside since it was so warm out, but she didn't quite remember any of her training so long ago on what to do about this. Actually, they never taught her anything on this, so she shouldn't be blamed. Was outside better or worse when it was warm out? Well, he could decide when they got to the room. "Come on." She spun on her heel and started back towards the room as she tried to figure out what exactly she was supposed to do at a time like this. He could go to bed with a wet head, so he just needed a change of clothes, right? and if he didn't have any he could just grab a blanket. Or so she would think.

Walking after Daine he was suprised that she even noticed his wetness. "I will change. I was hot and needed to cool down...the water helps." He said trying not to give away his dream. He didn't want people to go analyzing it and then telling him what it meant. If it meant something he'd find out sooner or later. In any case the rider seemed disincline to talk and less inclined to get into trouble on his behalf.
Daze fluttered off the woman's shoulder and onto Hanen's head. As usual she wanted to be higher than those around her. The vain little flit always found a way to amuse him. Walking toward the room he felt better and calmer. He would sleep well now. Daze seemed to be getting tired again too, her breathing was growing shallow and slow.
Upon arriving at the Creche Hanen smiled kindly to the rider trying to end the akward situation in a good note. "Thank you Rider Daine. I'll be asleep again shortly I can assure you. I'm certain you have things you would rather be doing. " As any good brat would do he gave her a title since he had no idea what dragon she rode or any other thing to call her by besides a name he figured she was a wingrider.

She nodded in relief when he said he had a change of clothes he could wear and then started back. She had nothing to say on the way back, so the walk was dead quiet. Daine was already planning what to do once he was asleep and wondering how much time she had before anyone might come to check on her. Well, if she was lucky no one would come. But even if they did, she had an excuse. Everyone was asleep and she wouldn't have to worry about them finding anyone awake. Yes, that would work. But where to? Well maybe the Bowl or the Spring or something. Just somewhere that no one would be at this time of night. His voice broke her concentration and she realized that she had walked too far.
Daine turned back around and walked back to the door as he spoke. "Good." She felt like she should say something more before letting him go like that, but all that came out was, "Good night." She watched the door close for a moment before she made her way down the rest of the hallway. Are you finished now? Yes, I'm going outside for a bit, that's all. When will you come to bed? In alittle bit, I just want to be alone for awhile. Why do you always like to be alone? I don't always like to be. I just like enjoying the things around me. And also, I don't yell at myself. She made her way outside and into the warm night ear. Daine sighed. Just for alittle while.

Hanen, glad that the rider had left finally, began t change into dry clothes. He would have liked to fall back to sleep but the task proved harder than he thought. For a little while Hanen lay wondering what was going to happen. He was always a hard worker and never really got into too much trouble, but he had been feeling so unlike himself lately. Nearly drowning had shaken him a bit. Now this dream...it just kept coming. He swore he had never seen the girl before. Not that he knew every person on Pern that he had seen at some point or another. HE just felt like he had to help this child... the innocence of it...
Who needed his help? Or was it only himself the girl needed? She never asked for help... she simply said she believed. Believed in what? The questions without answers ran throuh his mind until finally sleep fell upon him and he was lost in yet another dream.
