Master Briac afforded a quick glance about the bowl, ‘Thank Faranth for Merda and Caliath.’ At least now the chaos was down to a bearable dull roar. It was hard enough to heal without having to worry about pain stricken scared lifemates… the dragons weren’t much better.
The stout man continued walking through the lines of injured trying to assess where resources, both material and manpower, could best be used. The number of casualties was horrendous. Briac, in all his years as a healer, had never dealt with such numbers before, it would be taxing on the Weyr’s supplies to say the least. “Boy, what are you doing?” The Master Healer called out coarsely to one of the far too few healer apprentices on site.
“Nothing Master, merely easing his pain till he can be seen by a Journeyman or better.”
“Nothing you say? I would think giving fellis is more than nothing.” Briac knelt down beside the moaning man, trying to get a better idea of what was afflicting him. From the lacerations on his chest it looked like he had been crushed by falling stone. “Hear the gurgling? He is far too gone for one of us to save. Keep the fellis for those who have a chance at living.” Pulling out a red piece of oily chalk from his tunic pocket, Briac made a round dot on the dieing man’s head. “Go boy, see if Journeyman Abenzio needs anything.”
As the apprentice left the salt and pepper haired man called back out to him a sad compassionate look in his dark eyes, “It is a hard lesson to learn, but we can’t always save everyone.” With that said, Master Briac stood back up and looked about for Journeyman Tevel. “Tevel, start having the dying separated out, we’ve got to mark the ones we can’t save.”
“Aye. I’ll have the riders bring them to the edge of the bowl.” With that both men turned back to their tasks, until Briac was brought back by the light sound of a gold rider. “Ah, yes Safiya I can definitely use you here. You’ve a good grasp of basic healing from Revonna?”

(One Turn ago, Turn 2506)
The first of the Dragons’ wails echoed through the stone corridors of the Council Room bringing many to their feet. Merda and her Juniors rose from their chairs quickly as did J’ren and many of Sodalis’ Wingleaders. It was an ear splitting sound that drove the riders out to Sodalis’ bowl in search of a cause for such an up roar.
Periheth is gone…but her rider-They have her Caliath keened loudly for the younger gold, breaking into the air she circled her Weyr followed by hundreds of her kin. The feelings of sorrow and anguish hit Merda square in the gut, it was enough to make her have to pause leaning against the cool smooth wall. “Periheth? gone,” she whispered to no one in particular. “That poor child.” The older woman squeezed her eyes shut briefly before making her way on out to the bowl. The scene that followed left her in stunned silence.
The clutching Gold had not been the only causality…

Helios landed as a precise unit on the training field, keeping the left echelon formation intact even while coming out of between. I'an allowed himself a half smile as Reminth gave his report. Morning drills had been good, the Wing was still flying short but they were flying well. It looked like they might stand a chance in the Games after all.
Tell the Wing they've got a candle mark off, we'll debrief and be back in the air then.
The bronze rider along with most of the wing gave a brief salute toward Mariska and Zramuth before heading off about their various tasks, they were all too well aware of the Lady Gold's dislike of Helios and respected that. L'nuo and Enuth were one of the few left on the field.
Rough flying this morning huh? You handled yourself well though. The brownrider slapped Enuth affectionately on the shoulder as the dragon rumbled his assent. The down drafts out over the rim islands had been dangerously strong... much like Ista or so I'an had insisted. Mind dropping me off at the hall? Breakfast sounds good.
Not as long as you loosen the straps so I can nap. Food always sounds good to you. Aren't you going to pay your respects?
What? L'nuo was puzzled by his lifemate's words, looking he noticed the gold and her rider for the first time. Not sure if that would be healthy... all things considered.

N’vairim shut out the pain he felt through his connection with Hirgath. He knew that some of his weyrlings had already been lost, but he couldn't think of that now not now when he had to get the rest of them safely to Lateo. Feeling the rocking of the building N'vairim gave a shout for the remainder of the weyrlings to haul ass, this place was going to come down around their ears. The brown rider didn't have time to grab his own straps as he followed the last of his weyrlings out, he would grieve the girl he saw buried in the ruble of the east inner wall later. Hirgath had told him all that were coming out were out. "Don't just stand there, get those charring straps on your dragons." N'viriam made his way across the pitching ground to his own brown...

Higrath bellowed as he felt the panic radiate from his Weyrling charges. You need to behave like this is practice! Remember Drills! The grizzled brown touched down outside the Weyrlingbarracks, pressing to control the young dragons gathering there on the Weyrlingmaster's orders and in search of their lifemates.
"Hurry it up riders!" N’vairim shouted, even as the earth continued to rock. He stood in the Hallway counting Weyrlings as they filed out of the unsound buildings...

Are you sure it is really that bad Hirgath? Could it not be one of the islands off shore smoking again, sure you haven‘t misunderstood?
I am very sure… you and the Weyrlings need out of there. Now! Buildings are crumbling all over the place, the ground has opened up. The brown had exited his warm wallow and was winging his way toward His and the Weyrling Barracks as he communicated to his lifemate. Pandemonium was breaking out every where.
“Weyrlings, I want you out of here… double time. Call your life mates and have them waiting outside the barracks just like drills. Grab your riding straps on the way out.” N’vairim knew that tone from his brown, he was far from being confused. As the class began moving a more violent shake hit, making the walls of the commons vibrate and some parts of the walls crack and crumble….

((OOC Note: The weyrlings in this class are close to 9 or 10 months old. They have had preflight training, but no first flights nor have they ever been between. They've done trarrain recognition and they have discussed the hows and whys of between but are they really ready to put therory into practice? Prolly not but they are going to get a crash course and fast.))
(Muneo Weyr, Turn 2506)
The ground’s violent shaking came as a shock, there had been small rumblings of the ground before but earthshakes in the South were common place… nothing like this though, this couldn‘t be just another rumbling.
N’vairim grabbed his desk trying to save hides from spilling off, white knuckled fingers squeezed hard to keep himself up right as well. His voice borderlined perturbed, not even the earth had an excuse for interrupting one of his lessons. He quickly scanned over his Weyrlings’ faces reading a melee of emotions there as they scrambled from their chairs or were dumped to the floor violently along with desks and other miscellaneous items. Keep them calm Hirgath, keep them calm. You have any idea what‘s going on?
“Take it easy, try to keep your lifemates calm.”
The grizzled brown woke from a dead sleep, yawning at his rider‘s mental shouts. I’ve been sleeping… what about keeping the Weyrlings’ calm? They are calm… errr… It took several moments for him to glean enough info from the chaos to discover that their were many in trouble, including themselves. In a worried tone the brown spoke to his rider even as he clamped down tightly on a terrified blue. The big mountain has blown up…

"Shereae? Shereae!" The brown rider felt for a pluse... it was there pounding away faint but steady. Perhaps unconsciousness was a blessing in this mess. Taking the simple luxury he held her close for a moment before backing his way carefully out of the candidate barracks. They were still far from being safe.
The sharp rubble scrapped at the hide of the brown rider's back and arms but because of adrenaline he barely felt a sting. It took only a few brief seconds to be back close to a worried Nylath. The fire river is getting closer, we've got to get out of here... now.
I know, I feel the heat. The brown rider grunted as he tried to shift Shereae into a better position. Ny, I might need your help getting her hoisted up... . R'lan struggled trying to get her safely on Nylath's back, in one instance he banged her head hard against the brown's foreleg.
If she didn't have a concussion before... she's got one now... careful. I'm trying to be careful. She's heavier than she looks
The brown with both his charges launched safely into the air and between just as the candidate's barracks crumbled into an inferno, devoured by the hungry lava flow.

Nylath managed to dig out the heavier of rubble, he had a hole big enough for someone's head... but not their chest or the rest of their body. Moving forward, R'lan joined his brown, trying to tear away the remaining rock and mortar. It only sped up the Helios rider's resolve when he heard the young woman coughing. In that moment Nylath let out a deep keening rumble, stopping only briefly in his efforts to let his rider know of Alarath's passing.
Guilt and blame almost overwhelmed R'lan as much as the bucking of the earth... he should have given thought to the young men stuck in the barracks, he should have helped S'for but guilt could be wallowed in later. Shereae was what mattered most.

Yelling above the noise of the bowl the brown rider turned to his wingmate. “I haven’t checked, S’for. According to Nylath there’s only one woman in the girl’s barracks, but the guys… I don‘t know.” The brown rider wiped sweat from his brow as he tried to budge the heavy door, it wouldn’t give. “Both of us together can’t budge that door and there’s only enough room for Nylath to dig. S’for, go see what you can do for the other candidates.”
I’ll tell Shereae to stand back and try to hang on. Nylath moved closer toward the door, making his rider have to stand back or be crushed by his bulk. The large brown started digging at the rubble that once was the girls’ dorms. “Hang on baby…” ‘Please hang on.’
I hear you little one, we are with you. Nylath tried to sooth the girl, after all it was only a matter of time before he would move the rock.

R’lan held on tightly as the brown circled his way downward into chaos, his leather clad legs rubbing hard against the brown’s silky hide in the absence of fighting straps.
How are you going to get us down there in one piece Nylath?
Not sure yet. Just make sure you stick with me. Nylath winced in pain as embers burned through his wing membranes and also hit his rider’s bare back. What and miss out on the thrill? I don’t think so. Both rider and dragon surveyed the ruins of the candidate barracks and ever encroaching lava flow. The whole left side of the rock building that housed the girls’ cots was caved in. The guys’ barracks had faired marginally better. Alarath and his come to help.
‘How many of them were in there?’ R’lan’s fears ran rampant as he thought of the many things that could have happened to his woman, to fall with the rest of Muneo. Do you feel Shereae? Is she in there? I feel her, she is panicked, maybe hurt, I can’t tell…
Can you land me? In response the brown tucked his wings, dodging a careening blue in the process of bringing his rider closer to the ground. Heat hit R’lan’s face as soon as he dismounted reminding him of his father’s forge fires. If not gotten out soon, no own would be surviving that oven.
“Shereae? Shereae!!” The brown rider managed a choking desperate call into the inky smoke, hoping to gain a response.

Smoke. Suet. Dust. It made the air unbreathable-suffocating. R’lan covered his nose and mouth with a bandanna as he fought his way from his crumbling weyr, the rocking of the ground made it almost impossible to keep his balance. Nylath, what’s going on? The brown rider could barely see his boot clad feet as he went in the direction of Nylath’s wallow.
Earthshake, hot rock flows out of the mountain. Many are dieing.
R’lan broke into a semblance of a run even as the ground bucked and rolled. You’ve got to come to me Ny… I can’t get anywhere like this. It took only moments and Nylath’s large wings beat air down on the tall man, a moment more and R’lan was straddling his back and they were heading toward the upper levels of sky-to clean air.
“Sweet Faranth!” From this altitude the Helios rider could see glimpses of the destruction below - the sweep of the glowing lava river. The cries of the dragons echoed to him, a haunting melody carried up on the wings of the wind.
“Shereae, The candidate barracks! Shit” It was surrounded, an island amidst hell. Moving quickly downward, Nylath almost unseated his rider.
The Wingsecond says we are needed at the hatching grounds…
I don’t give a shell where he says go… we have to get Shereae. Eyes whirling in a bejeweled array of color Nylath did his rider’s bidding shutting out the bronze’s orders.

‘That’s better, this is the E’mion I remember. Cold and always so angry.‘
He should show you more respect. Savath shifted in her wallow annoyed at the loud little man who would dare speak to her‘s in such a way.
Turning back to face the hostile Wingleader, Kyparla folded her arms over her chest as much an action of defending herself from E’mion as it was to deflect some of the morning chill. She drew her eyebrows together showing new wrinkles along her forehead. Listening to his words she tilted her head to the side, a sardonic half smile pasted across full lips.
“You are one man - a Fall of a man, indeed - but still just a man E’mion. Nothing could have saved Muneo or Ryceth. Not you, not anyone.”
Taking a step forward Kyparla made a move to touch the Wingleader’s face but stopped short, instead she turned and left her booted heels clicking lightly on the dusty flagstones.

‘Kymin looks so much like him…I see so much of him in her.’
“It has been six turns hasn’t it?“ Kyparla began to pull away, as much as she needed his arms she had her pride, she was strong. The Weyrwoman of Lateo was not some simpering woman. E’mion had seen enough tears from her, hadn’t asked to see them nor had he offered to hold her. ‘He probably thinks I’m some weak silly wherrie.’ Kyparla wiped away her remaining tears and took a step back, not understanding how her heart could feel ripped out for a third time… it had been in pieces for far too long.
“Thank you for your concern Wingleader, but I’ve more work to do before I can seek my couch. I’ve got to ask the Healers if there have been any changes in the number of dead. I also have to check on Mariska.”
Kyparla searched his face, his eyes but couldn’t read the expressions there. “You should probably go to the Hall and see if you can find some numbweed and wine. Neglecting yourself won’t bring them back.” As hard as it was the rider turned to walk away, but couldn’t not without offering some word of comfort.
“I’m sorry, sorry for the losses in Helios. For the loss of Muneo. You can‘t blame yourself.”

“I thought… I saw… It was your Wingsecond.” The Goldrider tried to control the sobs that wracked her small body. Gone were the turns that had come and gone between them. The hurt was still as raw and fresh as it had been the day he had left for Muneo. He’d left without so much as a goodbye. All the sorrows of today combined with the many sorrows of yesterday lead the Weyrwoman on an exhausting flight through regrets, what might have beens, and never agains. She thought she had no more tears for this man, but Kyparla had been wrong before. That though could be thought of later what mattered now was this moment.
’I should feel guilt taking comfort while others are suffering… but I don’t. Why don’t I deserve some small measure of solace?’
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Helios brings you comfort, we all need comfort sometimes.
Kyparla relished the feel of his arms around her, for once she felt safe, nothing more than a woman. The rider didn’t want the moment to end because when it did all the horrors of last night would be real again, but end it must. Soon she would have to deal with a grieving Weyr… condolences would have to be sent to Sodalis… as if a few words of regret could change anything.
