Amneris the dreamy girl woke suddenly. Sweat covered her forhead, though her canines lay sleeping at the foot of her bunk. Quietly she walked out of the Girls Barracks and into the common area. Sitting on a couch she began to cool herself down, taking big, deep breaths. She wished her mother were there. The fourteen turn old often acted mature but was nothing of the sort. Her body was trembling and she began to feel a knot in her stomach. Her mouth was salivating a lot. She knew she had a high fever.
The healers always said when she got sick she got very sick, though she had never felt this bad. Maybe she should lay on the couch, but no,there came the stomach pains. She ran over to a bucket that had been left by the cleaning drudges. Her body was heaving and she felt herself shaking still.
The fever was high enough to make her throw up. That was not a good thing. Amneris may not know anything but she knew she was in no fit state to be walking allthe way to the healers. Grabbing the bucket she brought it to the nearest couch and lay down. Her body trembling, while sweat dripped from her forhead. She had never felt so horrible in her life.
((Just so no one gets the wrong idea, she would have what we call the stomach flu, but a severe case since she has never had it before and because she always runs a high fever if she gets a fever at all.))

H'mei, who had always been a light sleeper, awoke immediately at the sounds of shuffling coming from the commons room downstairs.
What time is it, Sarith? he asked his blue dragon sleepily. Sarith grunted from the weyrledge.
Before the sun is awake, replied the dragon, just as tired. They had spent hours the day before following a certain candidate and her new beau, and then they had both stayed awake late into the night discussing the senior queen's upcoming flight. Often, H'mei found Sarith best understood him, and he often turned to his dragon for advice and decent conversation. Sarith usually had a few good words for him, even if he didn't answer all of H'mei's problems.
H'mei sighed. It was too early for the candidates to be up and playing around in the common room; they all had chores the next day and they would all need their rest for the work. Throwing the covers back, H'mei flexxed his sore knee muscles and lifted his feet of the side of his bed onto the cold stone floor. Shivering in the cold air, he said, "I'll be right back, Sarith." He was replied to by a snore.
As he headed down the stone steps, he noticed the wastebasket by the door missing. He looked around the room, and almost missed the girl laying on the couch, her back turned to the door he had just come in. Walking over, he went around the couch and pulled up the closest chair. As he squinted in the dim lights, he realized it was Amneris, and she didn't seem like she was feeling too well.
"What's going on, Amneris?" he asked her quietly and calmly. He knew that sometimes when people were sick, vibrant noises made the illness worsen.

Amneris heard the man enter though she could not get herself up to look. Movement made her want to throw up again and vomitting again was not on her to do list. When the man sat next to her she figured out who it was, the candidate master. Hopefully she was not in trouble for this. She really coudl not make it to the healer in her condition, unless he wanted her puking in the caverns on her way.
"I woke up in a deep sweat and I felt ill to my stomach. I decided to get up out of the dormitory but that made it worse. I had to use the waste basket." She said softly as she was in some amount of pain and a lot of discomfort. Amneris galnced down at it and smirked...it had been very humbling to vomitt. The trembling had cotinued and was making her wish she had brought a wet cloth to keep her head cool while she could get ablanket to feel safe under. Her canines were still sleeping, fine guard animals they were...Her flit too was sleeping by himself on her pillow. He did not see agitated by her condition. Amneris had remained in her position, lying on her side in a fetal position on the couch. She dared not move, it would make her feel worse.

"I see," H'mei told her. "Yes, that does seem to be a sort of a problem. But no matter!" he said cheerfully, though still quietly. "Let me go get a cool rag for your head," he said, bending over to feel the girl's cheeks and forehead. "You are quite warm."
He went to the closest latrine to get a rag, though it was a girls' room.
No matter, he thought. If I happen to meet one of the young ladies in the latrine, I shall simply go about my business. Luckily, he met no girls, and wetted a rag with cool, not cold, water. He returned to Amneris's side.
"I'll go get a Healer, okay dear?" he said, rising after he handed her the cloth. "Or would you rather I stay with you?" he said, deciding to leave it up to her. He understood completely her lack of want or ability to move in her state.

Amneris listened to his footsteps as they walked to and from the latrines. She had closed her eyes for the time he had been gone adn reopened them when he got close. As he handed her the wet rag she managed a small smile and , "Thank you." before plaing it on her own head. It reminded her of home to have someone take care of her. Looking to the Candidatemaster. "I don't want to wake anyone...if you think a healer is necessary then I guess it is best." Amneris was not big on healers and espescially not on the healing process, it took too long and made her spend countless hours away from her music. She only hoped she did not sound rude by saying what she had. Neris generally said things without giving them much thought.

H'mei smiled in place of a laugh. "We'll compromise. If your fever becomes worse, or stays for much longer, then we shall send for a healer. If it breaks soon, we won't. Sound okay?" he asked, not wanting her to have to be poked and prodded over (not to mention kept from duties and learning) if she didn't require it. "I can quite understand not wishing to see a healer," he said, thinking of his knees and rubbing them. "I can stay with you for a bit, if you wish," he said, not wanting her to be alone in the candidate room. "Or, if you like, I can arouse your canines and flit. I just don't think you ought to be alone at this point," he explained.

Amneris ndded to his first question. It was more than fair. She really hated being ill and did not generally get ill too often. Tonight as going to be rough. Her canines had to work in the morning, they were exhausted...the Candidatemaster was already awake. She thought about if it would be selfish of her to ask him to stay. She felt like that was a better option. Even as she thought that it would make things harder on him. "Would you mind staying?" Her voice did not shake though her body trembled, she was after all good at controlling her voice. "Mother always said I, when I got sick, got the worst fevers."

"Of course I'll stay. It's my job," he said, knowing that the girl didn't want to inconvience him.
Sar, I'm going to stay with her for a bit, he told the dragon. She's sick, and we're not going to try to get a healer for a bit.
Sarith grunted back. Fine, he said. Sarith liked his sleep.
Pulling up another chair to rest his feet on, he looked back down at the sick girl. "Is there anything I can do for you? I know you'r a bit old for it, but I could tell you a story, or whatever. 'Tis up to you," he told her.

She was glad tonot be alone and though she was laying with her eyes closed again she was listening attentively. A story? She loved stories, of course that was just like the harper in her. "I love stories." She said it matter of factly. Though at fourteen turns she was seen more as an older person she often felt younger than those of her age group, finding herself to be more childish. At least the stry would take her mind off of her stomach and the hard aching feeling that was there.

"Alright," he said, mind searching for a good story that would be appropriate to her age.
"Once upon time, there was a small boy here at the Weyr for the Hatching. He wasn't sure what made his good enough to Impress a dragon, but he had asked to be presented months before, so he had to try now.
"One day, the Queen layed her eggs, and soon after came a Hatching, the day the boy had been dreading and yet anticipating for upwards of six months. As he put on his white robes, and stumbled into his sandals, he began to doubt his abilities to Impress a dragon, but shoved the thoughts from his mind, and left for the sands." H'mei looked at the girl to see how she was reacting to the story, and then forged on.
"When he arrived, the Queen dragon looked formidable, and he almost left. As he was turning for the door, he saw the eggs shaking and cracking, and decided to stay and support his friends who didn't Impress with him. While he was watching, a bronze came out, and for a scary moment, the boy thought that the bronze dragonet was for him. He had heard words in his head like he had learned that he would. Soon, though, he realized with great relief that the dainty blue, stumbling towards him, was Impressed. He felt the warmth of unconditional love, as well as a wave of difference wash over his mind. "Oh," the boy said softly, falling to his knees to meet his new friend." H'mei paused and cleared his throat. "They have shared a very happy life together ever since," he finished.
That was us, Sarith said. H'mei hadn't thought he was awake. I am, the dragon said simply.

Amneris was listening to the story with interest. She liked to hear about dragons they were very interesting to her. That must have been the best day of his life, thought Amneris quietly. She wasn't sure but the boys second thoughts about impression were similair to her own. "Does everyone feel that way before impressing because I feel similairly. What would a dragon want me for?" Her eyes opened to look to the Candidate Master. If anyone knew about Impression it would be him.
She wasn't a hard worker when it came to chores though half the time she had forgetten about them. Actually, Neris was nothing like most the dragonriders she had met. It made her think they got the wrong girl. Abruptly she saw an image of her firelizard looking at her empty bed. The little bron flew swiftly to her, nudging her head with his. He looked concerned. Solo decided to sit on the arm of the couch looking down at her like a gargoyle.

H'mei smiled and patted the little lizard's head. He had two of his own, well-trained, of course. "Well, dear," he said, after a moment's reflection. "I don't know. I've asked Sarith, my blue, many times why he chose me. You know what he says? 'You were there and I was there.' And if I bother him for more, he gets upset, so I have to stop asking!" he told her, quietly laughing. His own life had become so much more complete after the two became Impressed. "It is a fairly common feeling among candidates, though I should think the pressure is on more for Gold candidates like yourself," he added. "But you can't let yourself go if you don't Impress the first time around. It has always been my personal belief that confidence attracts a dragon. The boy in the story, he seemed unsure, but inside he was always proud of himself and the things he did. He knew he would be okay even if he never Impressed at all."
He heard Sarith rumbling, his mental voice sounding tired but awake. I'm going to the river for a while, he told his rider. The young dragons get there often before I do and the water is all dirty by the time I fight my way in, Sarith added. His stretching wings woke Tera and Aparo, who came to find their friend. They popped in above the couch, Aparo, his green, scolding him for leaving them alone. Tera, the brown, casually smacked her with his wing, causing her to chitter angrily.
"Shh!" H'mei said. "Be quiet, Aparo." The green gave him a reproachful look, but quieted down. "These are my firelizards, the green is Aparo, and the brown Tera."

He was right of couse she would be fine if she never impressed a dragon. She never really thought of herself as a gold candidate before. Was he serious, someone like her could never run a weyr. Amneris knew herself to be a bit careless and dreamy...it scared her to think of it so she let it pass through her mind without thinking too much about it, at least not enough to get herself stressed out. Amneris had never not been confidant that was certain. "Confidence is one of my stronger points, especially when it comes to a lage group of people. We harpers are good at that." She smiled a little thinkign of being the center of attention and how much she enjoyed it. "I'll be okay if I don't impress. I just keep thinking what was the point of leaving the Harper workshop if I'm not going to impress?" She wondered if dragonriders were getting sick of her talk of being a harper. She had just always enjoyed it...what could she do? It was a passion for her.
Looking at the two new firelizards she smiled, "Hello Aparo and Tera. This is my baby firelizard, Solo. Hes a bit of an egocentric tytpe but I figure thats normal. Do you know he likes to be up all night and sleep all day. I find that rather odd considering."

H'mei smiled. "He seems like a good little creature," he told her truthfully. Plucking the now barely moist rag from her head, he stood. "I'm going to go wet this again," he told her, heading this time for the boy's latrines. He wetted the rag, and returned, placing it on her head. "How are you feeling now?" he asked.
(( I know it's horribly short. Bear with me ^_^))

She nodded at his departure and turned toher head slightly to look at Solo. For onc ehe wasn't complaining that he was hungry. The little dear was actually snuggling up to her. Awww...he was so cute. Amneris wondered how she would ever get on without him. He wouldn't be jealous of a dragon, would he? She quickly disgaurded such thoughts and remembered she may not impress at all. She did have a very fine flit and should be focused on him.
"I won't be getting up anytime soon but better thank you." Amneris responded to H'mei. She was glad he had found her, it would ahve been an awfully hard night to get through alone, even if she could have done it. "Do you tell a lot of stories?"
