Singing or Chores? (Seph and Amneris)

Amneris sat in the Weyrhall, shirking her chores as usual the homely blonde wanted to be left to her own musings. She was humming the notes and writing them down as quickly as possible on her weyrhide. The quill in her hand finally stopped and she looked at it with a smile. Picking up her gitar she began to strum the harmony while she began to hum the melody. Tipp was on the floor next to her, always obedient he never left her side. Half Note had fallen asleep at Neris' feet.

Her fingers had a mind of their own and before she knew it the melody had grown faster and more upbeat and her voice had gone from humming to singing lightly.

She got up strumming her gitar a to the tune, a bit louder than before. Not many people were in the Hall this late in the afternoon anyway. She began to sing the song she had made up right there, putting the lyrics down on the weyrhide when she finished a line. Note howled a couple times to the gitar. They were both training still, mainly in the early mornings.

She glanced across the hall making sure she wasn't bothering anyone. Her voice was her strongest talent without a doubt. Her vocal trainging was extensive as well. She remembered performing at the Weyr several times during celebrations.

Seph was cleaning the tables in the Weyrhall. Her very own chore for that day. She wiped off a few crumbles of bread into her bucket and then began to wash off the table, leaving it to dry as she moved to the next table. Seph was cleaning a digustingally drity tavkle when she heard a guitar and someone singing. Lokoing around she found the source. Seeing the blond haired girl Seph tryed to put her to name. But couldn't think of it off the top of her head.

Seph listened to the wonderful music the girl was playing, not to mention singing.She has a beautiful voice, Seph thought as she continued to clean. After a while she approached the blond, trying to not startle her dogs. Standing a little ways off, she still didn't trust those dogs, Seph called out to the girl. " I haven't heard that song before...did you make it up? Well I don't care its beautiful, you have a great voice too, more than I cold ever wish for." She gave the girl a lopsided grin. The blond really did have a nice voice.

Amneris smiled in welcome at the girl. "I did make it up. I'm a harper apprentice. My names Amners, who are you?" She asked nicely. She was such a dreamy person that she was nice to everyone especially those who liked her music.
Tip and Half Note lifted their heads but didn't make a move toward the girl.
"My canines are harmless. They like people. Tip and Half Note." She pointed to each in turn. "I decided to skip my chore to play a tune.. I'm sure to get in trouble for it... but I think its worth it. Maybe I'll play it for a Weyr gather. "

'Well I can see why you where a Harper Apprentice, you sure are skilled. Seph gave the girl a smile, "I'm Seph...sorry I was just making sure your dogs weren't agressive, but I can see know that the clearly arn't." Seph motioned to her distance as she talked showing why she had kept her distance from Amneris. "I think you sound skilled enogh to play at a gather, though skipping chores might ban you from one. You never know." Seph personally wouldn't dream of skipping any chores for fear of the punishment. It was just the way she felt about chores.

" I haven't seen you here before are you new?" She looked the girl over but couldn't remeber really seeing her before, but Seph had a way of not noticing people when she was doing stuff. So Amneris could probably have lived at Sodalis for turns and Seph wouldn't have really noticed her.

"I used to skip chores all the time at the Harper hall and go down to the beach. Its lovely this time of turn, with the cool breezes and the sea creatures coming closer since there are less people." Amneris realized she sounded a bit dreamy. That was her though. She noticed the girl explain about the dogs and said understandingly, "Some canines are agressive, you are smart not to approach them right away till you know them. These two are tired due to their new jobs. Especially Tipp."
Seph seemed very nice. "I am relatively new yes. Got in a couple days ago. I'm a new candidate." She said it as if it wasn't a choice, as she had been practically forced to go by her mentor harper. "Don't see how a dragon could find me useful though. You would be better at dragonriding, you seem to stay out of trouble and your probably much more intelligent and less flighty."

“I don’t know….I haven’t really looked into becoming a candidate. I’m sure there’s going to be a dragon for you Amneris, dragon’s sometimes pick people who never thought they could Impress. Also I think it helps if you where searched, but I don’t know anything from then on.” Seph smiled to herself, thinking herself a Dragonrider was crazy, she was an orphan, and besides that no dragon every really searched her out.

Seph smiled at the young woman and sat down near her on a table, and continued on with their conversation. “I think dogs are okay, but what I really love is chicks. Their so cute and fuzzy and they will follow you around if you spend enough time with them.” She grinned getting a far away look in her eyes. Seph could remember holding the little fluff balls that where chicks when she was a child, but that was a long time ago. “ I have a hen whose going to hatch some out soon, I can’t wait. Not only will I be able to barter more with the chicks, but I can even trade my chicks for others of different bloodlines if I find someone willing too.”

Seph was getting excited just talking about it, this was definitely one of her favorite subjects to talk about. Before she talked again though, Seph studied the girl and hoped she hadn’t bored her to death with her talk of chickens and all. that sometimes happened with other people.

"I've never really seen a chick. They are expensive and my family runs a small cothold and can't afford them. The dogs follow me just the same. Since they saw me, both have followed wherever I go. Its hard for them to understand about how I have chores and they can't follow me everywhere. If I were to impress a dragon I'd be worried they wouldn't get along."
The chickens were interesting. The girl must know a lot about them to have a hen of her own. "I don't think I'd be able to sell them after playing with them. They'd be too cute to let go. Not even trading them for some others of better quality. My mother would say it was foolish of me. I suppose I am most of the time. My father was mad at me when I was little for doing that with a runner we foaled. I refused blatently to trade him for one of new bloodlines...for better breeding. My father was furious to say the truth cause I was sitting on the foal watching him pace. He thought I was not only disregarding his authority but the laws of economics..."

She laughed a bit. Amneris was an odd girl but she liked being seen the way she was. Her dreamy behavior and frail form often made her seem like a little girl instead of a fourteen year old. Even her voice still reached the highest soprano notes...

SEph nodded thouhgtfully, listening to Amneris talk about her life before Coming to Sodalis Weyr, sort of that is. "I nevr really thought i'd get too attached to the chicks, but that could be entirely possible. Already I don't think I could ever give up Fera and Kooki, I'm just to attcahed to them I think....but maybe if the chicks were young enough then I wouldn't be so attached to them so I could give them up easer. I don't know...I'll deal with that problem when it happens or comes around."

Seph sighed and scrubbed a friut stain off the table, though she barely put any effort into it, she was too entent on theirconversation to do any work. "So what are you hoping to Impress...?" Seph liked saking questions like that, though only rarely, she watched Amneris for her reply.

Amneris paled at the question. What would people say of her if she told the truth. "I never plan to impress..." Her eyes shifted to the ground. "I love being a harper and I don't know if I have what it takes to sacrifice my music for a creature like a dragon" Honestly what was wrong with her. The thin blonde looked like a little girl about to be reprimanded for doing something wrong.

Some people who deserved to have a dragon never impressed and then there were those who didn't deserve a dragon who did. Neris wasn't particularly looking forward to having a dragon. That must come off as a bit self centered. She already had trouble looking after Tipp and Note. "Is it wrong to be content with your life the way it is?

Seph stared at Amneris, but only for a second. She herself liked the way her life was, but that didn't mean she wanted to stay at the Weyr forever. "I don't see anything wrong woith being happy with your life as it is, and I guess if you love music so much than a a dragon would hamper your time creatign songs....I guess"

Seph was kinda lost, she had never encountered a Candidate who didn't want to Impress. It was strange, Seph shrugged her shoulders, "if you don't Impress i'm sure you'll be allowed to go back and become a Harper, but you never know you might Impress and well thats impossible to reverse." She looked at the blonde and at her dogs, wondering why she agreed to become a Candidate if she didn't want to.

Amneris wasn't sure what she should say. It wasn't like she asked to be searched. In fact she wanted to stay at the Harper Hall. The Master Harper who had been training her made her go. She had even convinced the darned rider to let her meet him at the WEyr so she could bring Tipp and Note.

"Sometimes I think its the people who want something the least that get it. I never asked to be searched. I wanted to refuse to come to the Weyr. My master forced me in a way... made a deal that I would meet the search rider here on time. I had been planning on not showing but he walked me here. HE had always wanted a dragon and wasn't about to let me turn down the chance at a life mate. I guess I'm one of the few that never once dreamed of riding a dragon."

"I can see why though, you didn't dream of Impressing a dragon that is. I mean you had a nice life...and then your forced to come here. Not that Sodalis Weyr isn't bad, its just that I personally woudn't want to be forced away form a place were I was happy already, and do something I never really dreamed of." Seph took a deep breath and smiled trying ot make Amneris feel better about her interesting situation. She herself couldn't really wait until she could return back to her very own weyrhold.

"I'm sure that you can go back to harpering after the hatching, if you don't Impress." Seph shrugged. She sisn't really know what the Weyrleaders would do with a Candidate thjat didn't want to Impress. She guessed that would be there own problem and not her's.

"Well I want to try this out before I turn it away. If the dragons like me so much I wonder if there is a life mate for me. Then I start to think of what would happen if I wasn't there to impress the dragonet. It would go Between. I really don't want to be the reason for the loss of a dragon, of course that is giving myself more value than I probably have. Who knows perhaps I'll become a Weyrharper...then you'll never be rid of me and my music."
Amneris watched the other girl's face as she spoke. As always Neris was trying to read her. Reading people was hard but helpful. If you could tell if a subject was making someone uncomfortable than you could switch to another and make the conversation better.

Sph laughed as Amernis spoke. "Get rid of you!! I think your just what this place needs, new misic and fun." She smiled at Amneris and then adressed her other part. "I don't think you should worry about killing a dragon when you die....it happens and it can't be helped. If dragon's didn't go between when their life- mates did, well then we'd be up to our ears in them. And what would be the use of queens.. the wouldn't have to lay anymore eggs becasue the others would never die. There's always a reason for life and death...at least that's what I believe."

Seph breathed slowly. That was probalbly the longest speach she had made in a VERY long time. "Oh and I'm sure you could be a great Weyrhaper...all you really need is a little more training. Or a dragon. "Seph smiled and turned her eyes onto Amneris, she'd been staring off into space when she was speaking, and studied her wondering what Amneris would Impress i f she did so.

Neris laughed at the outburst "As long as they don't catch me skipping out on any more chores the music and fun shall continue!" Her face was lit with a kind of muschief. Then came the dragon and death talk, honestly she fet Seph was very intelligent and had every right to impress a dragon.

"Well, I worry more for the ones who never find their lifemates on the sands...its tragic really. I think I'll write a song about it...should be brilliant , hopefull and tragic all at the same time." She thought about the way it would sound for a moment then continued the conversation. "I thought most harper candidates impressed to blue dragons... but how akward would it be to be a woman with a male dragon. I might ask Sanura how it works for her and Aramith. It seems odd to me, but perhaps for them its perfect. I don't think I'd be very good at controlling a great dragon like a Gold. I bet you would be better at that. You seem much more organized in your thoughts. Do you have any opinions on the dragon colors and ranks? Some people seem to think it matters a lot what color you impress... I don't understand how its so important."
